Never played East Clare. Athlone is a good course. Long and tricky. Lovely on a dry day apparently, although I played it on a very wet day and a couple of holes were closed and conditions made it very tough.

Have played both, and would pick Athlone of the two. Athlone is a super test of golf imo, if the wind is blowing in off Lough Ree it can be very tough. Some lovely views on it out over the Lough also. East Clare is a fine course aswell, but kind of in the middle of nowhere, it has some good holes like 9 & 10 which are both tough doglegs involving water. If its a society outing Athlone would be the choice, good golf course with more amenities close by.

Have never played East Clare but am a member in Athlone.

Athlone is a tough enough course but recently a few tee boxes were moved making it a bit easier (for society golf etc. play off the yellows!)

I played there last week and its bone dry now. Playing again wednesday morning & can;t wait!

I would go for East Clare. Having played both, there is no comparison. East Clare is a good test of golf while being society friendly, good holes but nothing that will send you away not wanting to pick up the clubs ever again. Athlone is not great in my opinion, up and down, no character and the majority of the day will be spent climbing up to tee boxes, abbsailing down to fairways and climbing up to greens. No contest here.

sure you disn't play esker hills?!!

Only tee boxes there is a slight climb to is the 13th! And what fun would a flat course be?

Athlone is brutal when wet and when bone dry you can end up with some unfair tight lies on the fairway through lack of grass at times.
I hate that stupid 13th in Athlone so that would put me off.
