    Hi

I'm hoping I can get some help here as I really don't know where to get correct advise on this.

I have a handgun which is a really basic small pocket gun which could be hidden between two palms

    Is says

    Remington ilion ny
Pat oct 1861 Nov 15 1861 on it.

Any ideas if it would be worth €10,€100 or €1000
    I haven't a notion.

    Thanks

Sounds like a derringer of some sort..is it single or double barreled? I presume at that date it takes a cartridge or cartridges.

Derringer come in all shapes and sizes and calibres..some are very simple but ones intended for ladies could be pearl handled or otherwise decorated.

Remington are one of the better known gunsmiths along with Colt and Winchester so the chances are its was mass-produced,however they quality of remmington ammunition and firearms is second to none so it is no doubt collectable.

You must be carefull attempting to sell firearms..there's a lot of legislation about prohibited weapons etc so its worth checking does it qualify under the Firearms Act or is it considered an antique and doesnt require a certificate.

    Do you have a pic?

Actually I found this which is exactly the same as mine

    http://http://www.fontainesauction.net/cgi/viewlot.php?sale=1252&lot=300

How would I know if I need a licence for it? And what is my best way of selling it? Thanks for replies.

This could be serious. If it is a fully functioning handgun of a certain calibre for which ammo can still be bought (i.e. not an antique) than you require a firearms licence to own it. This goes with secure storage etc..there#s a load of legislation around it and they take it very seriously, particularly when it comes to handguns.

If you are not sure you should go to your local firearms dealer/guns smith and have it checked out. Once it is fully functioning you could store it securely with him until you can sort a licence. However, be aware that he will charge you storage fees. Also, handgun licences are very very difficult to come by nowadays.

In case it is not working, i.e. a defective firearm or, what some call a deactivated firearm, you would still require a permission letter to hold it. You can get the letter directly from your local Superintendent.

I would post any questions regarding the legality of this in the shooting forum:

You could link to the thread here then.

    Best of luck!
