I was reading the latest edition of Irish Vintage Scene and something ive been wondering about cropped up, Theres a very very nice kadett coupe in it which has won most original car at Durrow, now the owner freely says its been fully restored and resprayed, i think im not mistaken in saying it doesnt have period tyress or even period branded tyres either, My question is this car original?? I would of thought not but please tell me if im wrong, im not trying in any way to take away from the car or its owner it is fantastic im just trying to get to the bottom of the 'originality ' issue ?
    Thoughts and opinions please??

    well this:

is extremely original with original paint, original tyres (x3 :( ), it even had original fuel hoses until I changed them yesterday but I can't see it winning any prizes for originality. :D

I would say everything on the car should be same as it was back in the day when it left the factory. No modifications/upgrades whatsoever. Tyres will have to be different from those which were on the car back then (you just can't use 30 years old tyres - I think you can get the same type with same tread, but if not, you will have to use some other tyres).

In my opinion if you paint a car the originality is gone forever (even if you use exactly the same colour). Things like hoses, bushings, brake pads has to be replaced, but I think you will keep it really original if you get the same stuff from manufacturer who was supplying a factory which made the car.

My Scimitar (SE6a) apart from exhaust manifolds and stainless steel exhausts, and steering wheel with gearknob is all original as far as I know. In 33 years nobody even put a mirror on passenger's side (which I appreciate).

    To me this is original:

interesting question. i have been to dozens of shows and displays in the states and nearly every single car has been repainted etc etc, these are all show cars , concours even..
an original car with all its original bits n bobs would be called survivors. these would be non painted and keeping its original paintwork, interior , engine and stuff.
they also allow 3 modifications or changes before its non original, that would obviously be tyres..

I agree totally about the paint myself, i think a car which has been painted is no longer original,
As regards replacement parts i think they should be source at autojumble/nos as much as possible

The car you have given as an example i think is correct but as regards show cars there are a lot of unrestored original cars available that are really mint !

    .

A cut n' polish, original plates, new up to date tyres ,wipers, bulbs, and brakes (safety issues). I'd be happy with that 'originality'

    I HATE (bad) resprays:mad:

For me there's unrestored original and restored to original , if both were of equal condition wise obviously the unrestored car would be worth more. I would have thought at a car show if the was a prize for most original it would go to an unrestored car and there would be another class for the pristine restored cars . Then the best of show would go to the car deemed best of all the class winners.
