I was going to castlebar today from heuston and checked the price online, it was 20 euro with the student special offers, I didn't have the money in the bank only cash so I went to buy them at the station, I was charged 30 euro for the trip. I didn't read any t's and C's saying the student deal was different online to the station.

Does anyone know where it says so if that is the case?

The ticket you got at the booking office is an open student ticket and can be used on any outbound train that day and any return train back, subject to it having a certain time frame; e.g. day returns, week returns etc. The student online fares for €20 commit you to travel on the specific train/s that you booked it for. They may allow you on a different train to the one you booked on but it's not assured or guaranteed.
