Good evening everyone. Had some trouble with my car earlier on.

Its a 98 2.0l turbo diesel Opel Vectra. I was driving home and the oil light came on all of a sudden then i looked in the rear view mirror and there was a mountain of smoking coming from the exhaust. Then the engine started revving like holy hell, just kept revving out. I pulled in and everything stopped then. It all lasted bout 20-30 seconds. Lots and lots of smoke ive never seen anyting like it. I dont understand how the oil light was on because it was only services 3 weeks ago :/

After 2 hours by the roadside unable to get a tow off a mate, i got sick of waiting and just drove it home, seen as home was only 3 miles away. Car was slightly smokey on the way home and the oil light kept coming on and off but got it home anyway.

    Any ideas?

Check all the pipework around the engine is in place and in good condition, including the intercooler pipes.

Sounds like a pipe has split.

The revving you saw was the engine auto-dieseling, ie. It was burning its own oil rather than actual diesel. Some vids on Youtube of this type of thing, think it's also called "diesel run-on"

Is it in any way possible that she could have been overfilled with oil?

just let the engine cool down. its does seem like it has been overfilled with oil. whats the worse case scenario now?

    I wouldn't start it.

The sudden oil warning light illuminating and the smoke wold suggest faulty turbo oil seals. If these were to fail, pressurised oil would effectively be driven into the engine by the turbo via the inlet tract, where it would be combusted and result in the smoke. It would be odd to find the engine having been overfilled. I would have expected to see less oil on the dipstick. Again I wouldn't recommend driving the car until you have the problem investigated.

As above, turbo seals have failed most likely. Did you have to stall the engine to turn it off?

I just drained all the oil from the car. Serviced it again myself. I put 5 litres of oil into and looked at the dipstick and there is no oil showing on the dipstick. 5 litres of oil, that cant be right. Anyone any ideas?

I left the car overnight checked the oil again this morning and stil nothing on the dipstick.

Did you put the sump plug back in? It's gone somewhere.
