if you have been with them for more then a year, you should ring em up and say your off to ntl and they will offer you a discount for maybe 6 months but you have to be with them more then a year.
in fairness sky are much better then chorus or ntl IMHO

If you want it and can afford it then its not too much. I would be expecting 100mb broadband and free calls to anywhere to be included for that price!!

Yea I can afford it but if it's ridiculously overpriced im ringing sky. What does everyone else pay for sky?

Ask yourself what you like to watch and how many hours a day you wish to watch TV? You could buy quite a few DVDs /Box sets for that price although I agree you have fewer options if you really need live sports. (I don't)

Mine should cost that but I'm paying half that for a year.

How long do you have Sky? If it's a couple of years it's worth ringing them & getting a reduction.Cancellations/Retentions can give deals.Mention that you are considering cancelling and you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll give you a deal.

I have the entertainment pack + sports at half price (€29.50) and multiroom at €15 so I pay €44.50 a month.

False economy,I gave up doing that as they ended up taking up space having been watched once or twice at a push.I know one woman who spends roughly €25 a week on dvds between buying them for the kids & renting them for herself & her partner, strange thing is she does this as she thinks Sky is too expensive.

Not at all. It's a fantastic package. I watch it for hours every day. €90 a month divided between the 3 people in the apartment. For nothing.

I always wonder about those that pay Sky for their TV. Paying is one thing but you still have to put up with the ads which in my mind is crazy. If your paying cash for a few channels then you should be ad free, a bit like the HBO model. Not only that, bu the ad's themselves are getting longer and more annoying, not to mention the fact that a lot of the ads are either UK consumer based or channels advertising themselves.

Freeview/Freesat ? - fair enough, I just hit mute during the ads and actually use the glorious breaks to talk to people or the dog. But if I were to ever pay some Joe money for my TV, I'd want ad free, and that doesn't seem to exist so I simply don't.

Debatable - depends on viewing habits and whether you have niche or mainstream tastes. Personally I rarely watch a movie more than once anyway - although I haven't rented a movie in years.. I also like the luxury of deciding what to watch and when (even leaving dvds on the shelf for 2 years before getting around to watching them. Granted PVRs (Sky+) give you some of that too.

theres a lot more out there than just Sky. HAve a look on the foreign tv section. A lot of English/American stuff can be gotten for free, or for some pay TV it starts off quite reasonable.

Cyfra+ (Canal+ Poland) Subs start from €170 a year (Most films, series are in English, EPL is only in Polish)
Al Jazzera sports €100ish a year. (90% of content is in English)

I rang them up to cancel about a year ago as I had a similar package and I was made redundant. I was given 3 months full package free to reconsider. I then rang up to cancel and I was given a permanent price of 27 for the entertainment, kids and discovery (not sure what its called) bundle. 27 is what I pay in direct debit including vat.

To be honest I am still thinking of getting rid. The adds on Sky are unbearable to me. I mainly use use the beeb, netflix and downloads as there are no adds every five minutes. With the sky box you get a good few free to air stations BBC, UTV, C4 etc.

Just had a look on the UPC website and correct me if I'm wrong but the equivalent package is about 80 euro. I wouldn't bother switching for a tenner a month as I prefer sky. I'll see if I can get sky cheaper though.

Surely that price includes Broadband and Phone no? EDIT: No, it doesn't... F*** me, Sky Sports is so expensive :(

I'm with UPC... Their TV service is a piece of crap in comparison to Sky, but I'm not a big TV fan.

Their BB, on the other hand, is the best in the country.

which one has all the premiership games? can you subscribe if you're using a sky box for freeview, is there a thread on it?

you would need a 2nd dish or a modified dish for access to another satellite (Hotbird at 13 east, sky uses Astra 2 at 28 east). You would need a 3rd party receiver, or something like a combo box which will do all the services in one box (Would receive Astra 2, Hotbird 13, aerial) A simple diseqc switch would automatically select the right satellite when the channel is selected. Have a browse around the foreign satellite forum for ideas and advice.

Cyfra+ has a good choice of EPL, Spanish football. If you have a slightly more expensive package you'll get German football too. Al Jazzera has near enough everything expect EPL.

Worth every penny imo. I watch a huge amount of sports on Sky Sports and ESPN as well as having Sky Sports News on every afternoon. Add in the movies watched and I certainly get my moneys worth. Have the BB with UPC and no way would I move to their TV service.

Yeah. EU said so not so long ago.

A good channel for German football is the Eastern European Eurosport 2. They usually have 5 live games a week. It can be found on the cyfra package.

I have been close to cancelling Sky a few times but couldn't go through with it. The main reason why I didn't switch to FTA was the football. (The final games of the season recently and in particular the Man City game live, made it worthwhile. Some drama!) I watch alot of TV so I get good value out of my Sky package. I enjoy alot of the programmes on Sky (esp. Sky1, Atlantic, Comedy Central, Discovery, Movies, etc) HD is an amazing picture and the Sky+ box is good equipment.

Overall I think Sky, although costly, is worthwhile in my view. I wonder what the increases in prices will be like in January 2013 when the price freeze is over?

They apparently are, so says the ECJ in Murphy v MPS. The Court found that clauses in rights agreements prohibiting the supply of decoders and viewing cards outside a specific territory are an unlawful restraint on trade. The law will probably be changed eventually but yeah, thats what the ECJ says.

My post was more a pre-emptive warning against discussing anything that is illegal, like card sharing or the like.

All the better! (Had a look on the Sky Ireland website and it just says 2013 but doesn't give a month. Just assumed it was January.)

I could understand if you were a huge football fan how people would pay alot of money but their movies package is absolute tripe. I pay Sky €24 a month for the standard package with entertainment and the High Def channels also which is half price from the normal €48 a month for the same package thanks to a boardie here who shared a discount code last September over in the bargain alerts forum.

I have been a Sky customer non-stop since 2001 and have cancelled and resubscribed several times to get special prices and introductory offers asit seems Sky loves new customers but don't give a toss about their existing customers and will often only give you the deal you want after you call their bluff and cancel, I have a letter inviting last years account back to Sky at half price for 12 months and if Sky don't continue my half price offer for a second year I will cancel this account and rinse and repeat again.

I don't pay extra for the multiroom but would a second box if it was available at the same price. Instead I have a HDMI splitter and HDMI-Cat5 box and have it ran over Cat5 cables to the second room and use the Magic eye to change channels via the coax cable.

Sky is not worth more than €30 a month and if I couldn't get it for that I'd go FTA and use the money on the broadband and something like Netflix.

    Well the EPL has finished.

The Euros are on Terrestrial TV.
The Olympics are on Terrestrial TV.

IMHO would Cancel the sports and renew in September.

We've had Sky since 1991, Sky was such great value for money for a very long time, £10 a month for Sky movies and all the other channels, this then increased to £15 with the Movie Channel and Sky sports added in, still great value. We eventually dropped Sky Movies and Sports when Sky World went beyond 45 Euros a month, it's mad to think that this package is now over 90 Euro per month. No Way is it worth it. it's overpriced by at least 40 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,677 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Sky is so expensive probably because of how much the EPL rights cost. Simple as.

Personally I think its too much. If you like TV and can afford 91 each month, then its your call. I was a Sky subscriber since it started in the UK (over 20yrs) and cancelled last yr. I felt I was paying for something I wasn't using as much as I used to.

Now I have a Humax recorder and Saorview, and I'm more than happy. Any really big football match, I can visit family or the pub and watch it.

My subscription is now zero each month. I like that price.

Dead right ... blame those overpaid divas in the premiership!
No wonder the price freeze is until August 2013 - the new deal if Sky get it - will probably be higher than the last - meaning higher sky sports subscriptions.

I pay €91 a month ... I know it's overpriced, but don't go out as much these days - so treat myself to sports and HD - and throw in sky movies (€10) for the kids - if you have kids movies is good - woeful otherwise. If you are paying a premium for sports - you might as well go HD also. Have done the internet stream thing before - too much hassle.

I go down to €25 for the summer months (kids are suffering - there is very little kiddies stuff on the basic) - but hey it's summer get out and play!

It is a good service ... Sky go is a great add-on - once they have the movies on demand available here, that will be good too! Buy yeah €91 is still too much - but I think its the only alternative if you are into your sport. Otherwise FTA/Saorview is the way to go.

What they should do at the very least though ... throw in HD if you subscibe to movies, sports or both. Like the old Sky+ charge used to work.

I used to have the full package up until a couple of years ago but got rid, just have the basic package and thats only on the insistence of the Mrs.
€91 a month is crazy money, especially in this climate.

The movie channels are awful. I get my sport elsewhere and alot of TV shows elsewhere too. Having said that, my 1TB box is still always at about 70% full so I`m still recording and watching a lot of stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,677 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

€91 each month is crazy money if you think its crazy. If you are happy to pay it, then its not crazy money. I say let each person decide for themselves whats crazy and whats not. Personally I wouldn't pay that for TV entertainment, but thats just me.

Maybe the person who spends €91 for a full month doesn't drink, yet another person who slags off €91 per month would spend €100 per night if they headed out on the lash.

    Each to their own.
