Tractor Life Expectancy

We have a 00 JD 6410, and even though we got a little bit of hardship from it a couple of years ago, the last few years shes been running great. Cosmetically its in fairly good nick as it gets a good powerhose every few months. Baring a major meltdown i find it hard to see how we wont get another 4/5 years out of it, but 17 years seems like an extortionate amount of time to get from a tractor built in the nuoghties.

So just wondering, what is the general life expectancy of your current tractor. Whether your someone who changes every couple of years or you have the same machine you had 50 years ago, how many more years do you expect to get from it.

And seeing as all we hear about these days is how lightweight and rattly tractors built these days are, what do you think the average life of an average tractor is these days.

I was told with regular servicing you should get 14,000 hours out of a tractor, so it depends on how many hours they're doing really...

There was an article on a contractor in the UK. He had a 6400 john Deere with just over 38,000 hours. Hes advice was service everything by the book, and use only JD parts and JD oil. The parts that went past there life expectancy on the manual were changed when they were due and still going!!!

I would agree with his system 100%, how long they last depends on how well they are serviced.

i think they should last a life time. the biggest thing i think to mind is the apperance of the tractor cause if rots takes over and theyn the engine needs a rebuild people will generally scrap it whereas with a nice clean tractor people will normally overhaul the engine or other parts which are gone. i dont think its years or hours that matter but rather apperance and cosmetics. anything mechanically can be fixed without much hassle.

We have a 1974 Ford 5000 still going strong. No idea what the hours are because the only dial that works is engine temperature!!
