Wasnt really sure where to put this.

I currently have an 09 BMW. No claims bonus etc. The missus is 21 and is on her provisional licence and I was thinking of getting her insured on it since she doesnt have any other car to practice her driving in. I called around a few different places, but as soon as they hear "21 year old.... beamer" its just a no-go.

Anybody know a company that would insure her?

Im also half thinking, would it be handier just to buy something like a cheap second hand seicento and just get her insured on that?

Surely if you already have a policy in your name you can just ring up and ask how much it will cost to add your missus?

I wouldn't have thought I was terribly unusual to add 21 year old to a policy.

you could very well be cheaper to by a cheap small run around and insure it than adding a named driver to your (assuming) large engine bmw

besides do you really want an inexperienced driver in your nice shiney bmw? be prepared to pull your hair out when it all goes wrong

The "L" in the L-plate stands for LUNATIC

The insurance policy probably has a restrictions on power/engine size for named drivers that don't have a full licence or under a certain age. Even an entry level model 2009 BMW 520d has 177bhp which is a pretty powerful enough car for a learner driver to be behind the wheel of. I'd imagine you will find most insurance companies will probaby have similar restrictions on their policies.

If she can get her own car and insurance then it will work out cheaper for her in the long run, insurance wise as she will build up her own NCB.

What car is it? Im not really surprised that many insurers wont touch a 21 year old learner on a 09 BMW to be honest, especially if it is one of the more powerful models.

Also learners tend to hit things; Id seriously reconsider putting her on the insurance of your BMW if I were you! Best thing for a learner to do is go out and buy a small cheap runaround to learn on. She will start building up her own NCB which will help her in the long run.

Id say XS would insure her on the BMW for around €650 if she has about a years driving experience and your car is worth more than €5000. They seem o be the only specialist insurers in Ireland as all the others are singing off the same hymn sheet. Would be better to have some of the UK companies.

Would you want to gamble on having a €4k excess on your 09 BMW just so you can have a learner driver down as a named driver?

Its 3k now. And maybe his girlfriend is one of the many learners that drive with due care and follow all the rules, but who knows.

Well I'll be with her at all times when shes driving. All learners have to have a licenced driver at all times. So Im not too worried about any tips or anything. Although she'll be single again if she does tip anything :D

Thanks for that suggestions Chris. I never heard of XS. I'll see about belling them up tomorrow morning.
