Over the past few days I haven't been able to receive digital aertel on my sony z4500

it was working fine for the past few years.

I've done a full factory reset of the tv.. Still no joy
    Any ideas?
Have rte changed some spec somewhere along the line ?

(i know that the tv is not saorview approved, but had been working fine since day one )

The spec has been consistent since sometime in 2008.
But RTE may vary which parts they apply!

Unlike Teletext the Digital text isn't built in. It's an application running on an MHEG5 "engine". The application can change or extra applications added.

RTE Digital Aertel work fine on my non Saorview approved LG LF series Freesat / Freeview TV

    Strange that it suddenly stopped.

I might reset it again and select a different country (currntly set to uk, cos roi only displayed old type text)

Any suggestions as to which country I should try ?

Has stopped working on my Sony W5500 too.

Strange that 2 sony's have the issue.

No, If it's a Sony Issue and other sets are getting MHEG text, then it would be strange if lots of Sony TVs are NOT affected! :)

It stopped working on RTE1 only I'll wager....that is because it was not actually Digitel Airtel. :D

Strictly speaking the old stuff is 100% Digital for dedicated hardware, and the new stuff is an application like a streaming content Android app in concept, or the old Nokia Symbian Widgets before they stupidly killed them.

The RTE1 teletext was a DVB based standard implementing the old analogue teletext but RTE only ever promised to support MHEG5 which is a higher layer application. Now they are keeping that promise.

I'd rather RTE gave people with bricked tuners that 0x1 Tuning Amnesty after Mux 2 launches....... personally.

Samsung saorview approved TV here. Getting old fashioned Aertel on RTE1 and RTE News Now at the moment. MHEG5 on RTE2 only. Something seems to have changed alright.

Just check the 26" Sony LCD, Saorview approved. MHEG-5 digital text working fine on all RTE channels but no Aertel teletext as I have set to UK

I'll not lose any sleep over not having RTE Telextext.

Probably the worst quality, most out of date teletext I have ever seen.

No problems here with Digital Aertel on a 2 yr. old non-Saorview Sony W5810

Which country did you select during setup?

If I select ireland, I only get the old style aertel

I also have a 4 yr old (2008) Sony V4500 that will only display traditional teletext in the Ireland setting and MHEG-5 when UK is selected on setup. I haven't changed the setup since the pre-launch engineering test transmissions started here in Mar 2009 so that I had a fall back to the analogue VHF/UHF channels during the tests (selecting UK at install would've disabled the VHF analogue tuner for Mullaghanish RTÉ1&2). I'm keeping this setup until ASO.

So I'm not sure what year Sony activated MHEG-5 in the Ireland profile for its range of TVs, 2009 or 2010 or why your TV has stopped displaying MHEG-5 text?

Anyone hazard a guess as to what has changed?

Still working fine for me for all channels on my Samsung C530.

We've a KDL W46XX and Digital Text has recently stopped on it.

I have had no issues on my Samsung 32ES630, but I have noticed a small occurrence which has only very recently surfaced. When selecting Text, the content of the main Aertel page displays, but the actual "RTÉ AERTEL" logo in the top-left of the screen sometimes only appears separately after a second or two.

When the logo does appear, it looks to be of less-sharp quality compared to the rest of the text, as if it's a slightly inferior JPEG image added on top of the main page.

Onboard MHEG engine cannot understand Data carousel on mux. You would have to inspect the raw mux before and after with a TS analyser.

I presume people have deleted the channels and rescanned the mux channel to see if that clears the issue.

I have been observing the changeover to digital over the last number of years and we are told there are many advantages in the change such as widescreen, better picture and digital text. RTE launched Saorview a year ago and for me the text worked fine until a few weeks ago and suddenly stopped. Are these sudden changes going to be a feature of the future where you won't know from one day to the next that a change is being made that can stop a part of your service working?
Older folk are being encouraged to switch, but is there any guarantee that their equipment will do and continue to do all it says on the tin?
Why would someone continue to tweek things for the worse and stop equipment from working unless there is some advantage to someone else? I suspect manafacturers are the winners here with the public having to fork out more than once to get the service they pay for.

Yes, a Saorview logo on the box should guarantee this.

Except service link, because they are not tested for it, or so they say. Possibly other 'features' may turn out to be outside the Saorview specification. We will find out (eventually).

Remember the Philips issue, and now the Sony issue.

No. Haven't done that. Will when I get a chance and post back.

Have now deleted and re-scanned. No joy. Sony 40W5500.

By the way it seems that RTE have no intention of doing away with Aertel as its a money spinner....... for those wondering if it might cease into an MHEG only environment.

RTÉ did say previously that traditional teletext would cease at ASO or sometime thereafter maybe they mean it will evolve into MHEG-5 Digital Aertel only?
"I don't believe it will cease or end. I think it will evolve. We have a great audience; we seem to be meeting their needs. Why would we pull the plug on it?" said Muirne Laffan, managing director of RTE Digital.

    Just curious
Will traditional teletext be available on NI-Mux or will that be MHEG-5 only?
Does UK spec not allow traditional teletext on Freeview HD STB?

I think it will evolve into a digital MHEG-5 text as it use less space on the MUX compare to traditional teletext

There's been no mention of which text service will be available on the NImux if any. Don't think the Freeview spec provides for traditional text.

According to this RTÉ document (page 39) the Saorview multiplex allocates 1 Mbps to MHEG-5 text and 300 Kbps to each of the 3 traditional text streams.

    Thanks Cush.
300kbps for each channel that want to use traditional teletext, total is 900kbps while 4 channels are using MHEG-5 at 1mbps.
does this mean if TV3 & TG4 change over to MHEG-5 will use extra space?
Or is maximun at 1mbps for any channels want to use MHEG-5?
MHEG-5 is far more flexible with different fonts, graphics and so on
even the € on traditional teletext does not show correctly on my TV but is perfect on MHEG-5

Lost MHEG text on both a Sony W4000 and a V4500. Country setting on both is UK.

Fine on a saorview approved ex524. Country setting Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭Souriau

My Sony ex320 is set to UK for Freeview, so I still can get Saorview and RTE digital text no problem
This TV is having certificate approve for both UK, Freeview and Ireland, Saorview.
Even the time change is not an issue on this TV when is set to UK.

Changed the country setting on the W4000 and the V4500 to Portugal. Now getting the older Aertel text on both sets. This text wasn't available with country set to Ireland, neither was the MHEG text.

Plus the clock is correct on the EPG. Choosing countries such as Sweden had the time on CET, so the EPG time was one hour ahead of Ireland.

Strange one Cush. Mines a 26" V4500. Tried a rescan, country setting Ireland, still couldn't get traditional text. Clock fine. Changed country to Portugal to get text, plus they are the same time zone as Ireland.

Mine's a 26" V4500 also, just checked and text is OK. Don't know why your TV isn't displaying the traditional text.

I've set my z4500 to portugal and I now have old style text.

    Ah well.. Better than nothing.

Is there any likelihood that Sony might be willing to provide a firmware update to restore digital text, do you think?

For such a small market, and for a set that they never claimed to be saorview approved/compatible... I would doubt that any fw update would be forthcoming
