Ok so basically i saw a car i really wanted a month or so ago, it was sold almost three weeks ago and now it has teleported to down from leitrim and i have a question which will effect my ability to buy it.

Car was on Irish plates a month ago, i emailed garage to see if they changed to UK plates yet but it's late so.

What i want to know is and i hope im wrong, is if it's pretty much free to change a car from Irish to Northern/UK plates or would it have been in the dealers interest to wait abit because of cost.

As if a car that was Irish reg a month ago is now UK reg and i have to pay VRT on it i think i will cry(or just not buy it and be very very sad)

    Thanks boardsies :pac:

VRT is only paid once, so if it went from being Irish registered, to UK, and is coming back you're all clear I thought.

This paticular car judging from the speedo was originally a UK(guessing as Irish cars only have KMS on them) car but then changed to Irish plates and possibly now back to UK.

    I would link car but it's a sekret :)

Also you need to pay VRT to make an Irish car English ?

It is a very small charge of £50 to the DVLA for a UK reg number.

So (bear with me lads im abit slow today as i have been lifting all types of furniture and push starting corsa's with foreign women in them and all sorts of other madness today) but ...

If the car WAS Irish reg and the €50 was paid to change it back to uk plates do i have to pay VRT to change it back again or ?

It's not illegal and it was only every payable once.

Well seeing as being within the EU means tax harmonisation for movement of goods between member states i would call it illegal under EU laws, but im not going to open that can of worms.

    Thanks for the info

There is a VRT refund scheme in the offing to allow for refund of VRT when a vehicle is exported. It was included in the finance bill after the last budget but has yet to be enacted. So I reckon you are safe enough in this case, i.e. there will be no VRT payable.
