    Hi all,

I am 5'11 nearing 6ft and am looking at a 52cm frame 2nd hand road bike.
    Does that sound totally odd?

    "looking"? Why so small?
You should be minded towards a 56/58?

Have you ridden it? If not, you should. There's a good chance the saddle will be too low, even when the seatpost is extended to the "min insertion" mark. Also check for toe overlap, where your toe makes contact with the front wheel during a tight turn when the cranks are horizontal - best avoided.

Don't buy a bike that might be two sizes too small just because the price is right and/or you like the look of it.

I'm the same height as you (maybe half an inch shorter) and I fit a 54cm road bike running a fair bit of drop from saddle to bars. Geometry varies between bikes but I'm at the upper end of the range for a 54cm bike. My training bike is a 56cm (different brand) and that fits fine. Very hard to see a 52cm bike working, even with a long stem, saddle all the way up and back etc. As the previous poster said, don't compromise on fit to save money.

54 or 56 is probably more appropriate. 52 or 58 would look comedy.

Unless its a ridley which are often 4cm bigger , if it says 52cm it could well be a 56cm, bring a measuring tape and measure top tube length, and seat tube height.

I'm 6ft and have a 2nd hand 54cm Ridley Triton. With a longer stem (120mm) and saddle back it feels comfy enough in the drops, but a bit too upright in the hoods. 52 for a 5'11 rider could feel very squashed, particularly where you want to stretch out a bit on longer rides.

@dancecatz2000, interesting info re Ridleys, I'm now off to measure my frame.
Edit: Seat tube and top tube both bang on 54cm

I'm 181cm and had to get rid of a perfectly good 58cm due to shoulder pain. Had a bike fit and now on a 56 and it's perfect.

    I'm 5 11" and ride 54cm & 55cm bikes. I definitely wouldnt be getting a 52cm frame though.
Also depends on inside leg measurement (you could possibly fit 56cm if your legs are on the long side)

    I'm 6'2" on a 60, Fits like a glove.
Nothing worse than a chap who looks likes he's on his little brothers bike I think.

I'm 5 11 and cycle a 52. Its Top Tube is 56.5 though. I only ever go by the top tube measurement as thats the real size of the frame in my opinion.
