Excellent Brazilian beer

So I was in Sao Paulo last week and I sought out the best bars for craft beer but what came next I wasn't expecting. I went to this place, http://www.altodospinheiros.com.br/, and was pleasantly surprised to find the largest beer selection I had ever seen (bearing in mind I only have Ireland to compare to as I have never been to any of the big bars/shops in belgium etc.)

Anyway, the guy working there asked me if I had tried any Brazilian beers before. I told him I had a bottle of Baden Baden barley wine a few days before which I enjoyed and like a true beer snob he shook his head and told me it was too mainstream and that I should try a few he recommended. So he wrote down 4 beers on a piece of paper of which 4 I sampled and I genuinely have to say that they were as good as anything I've tasted within their respective styles.

First I had a bottle of 3 Lobos Pele Vermelha. An IPA with a nice orange peel twist. Really good. My only issue was the art work on their labels. A total rip off of Steadman's work for the Flying Dog range.

Then I had another IPA, Colorado Indica. This was my favourite from the two IPA's. Very much like North American IPA's and maybe it was the heat and the ambience over there but it went down so so well. As good as any IPA I've tasted.

After this I had a bottle of Way APA. For a low % it was really tasty and the hops seemed to be so fresh.

Lastly I had a bottle of Wals Petroleum, a 12% imperial porter, and it was exceptional. Strong coffee and dark chocolate flavours and the 12% volume was well hidden.

I went to Brazil with a real narrow mind thinking that because I had never heard of any decent Brazilian beers that there probably wasn't any. How wrong I was! The country is huge so naturally there would be some sort of independent creative brewers. I would love it if I could get those beers over here.

Here are pics of the beers:

Great post, thanks dude. I'll be heading to Brazil in September so will hopefully be able to get to this place.

What kinda price range were the beers?

They were all the equivalent of what we would pay here. Sao Paulo is one of the most expensive cities in the world so they certainly weren't dirt cheap. I enjoyed the petroleum so much that I took a few bottles home. Enjoy!
