    What exactly is your budget?

You could easily buy a HP touchpad on adverts for around 180. I bought one a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it tbh.

You can dual boot operating systems on it which is pretty cool :)

Anyone here actually bought through www.aliexpress.com? The Z280 C91 looks good for the total price (works out at ~€150 incl. duty) for a 10" tablet - full specs look good - tempted!

Anyone here heard of or bought from memorycards.ie. They have some tablets for sale that seem too good to be true. e.g. http://www.memorycards.ie/vida-it-bellatrix-ii-10-2-inch-1-5ghz-android-4-0-4gb-tablet-pc-1gb-ddr3-ram.html
I am wary as when things seem to good to be true they usually are!!!

€180 is a bit of a rip off for a HP Touchpad as when they stopped making them, they were all sold off by HP for €120. I now wish I had bought one.

exactly, they were all sold off...so getting the touchpad for less than 200 is still a decent buy IMO when you consider the specs compared to a lotofother tablets out there

They have full company and contact information on the Contact Us page. Would that be enough?

Edit: That particular one has a resistive screen and small native storage.

Just bought this one off amazon :

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Onda-Vi40-Elite-touchscreen-compatible/dp/B007IH40YU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&m=APT3IFMQZTYQY&s=generic&qid=1337691358&sr=1-2

works out at £173 inc. shipping to Ireland. This is the second one of these I bought - got one for the daughter a couple of months ago and was so impressed by it I got one for myself. Here's a review on youtube :

Anyone had experience of the Blackberry tablet? Had a quick demo in pc world today and it seems really fast and responsive to use. Only €229 which seems a good price. I have only ever used Android so know nothing of Blackberry.

Its not running android it runs an oddball OS called QNX usually seen in embedded stuff like point of sales machines. It took them 10 months to release an email app for it and thats still buggy by all accounts. Android apps are run in an emulator and you'll only be able to run approved apps as future updates will prevent sideloading apps. There is virtually no community support for it.

Aliexpress is just a marketplace like ebay with lots of different sellers. You need to review the individual seller you are going to purchase from, look at their feedback, length of time they have been trading etc.

The Kindle Fire is basically the same hardware as the Blackberry but runs with Android, there are ICS roms available for the Fire. The Fire is only available in the US at present but is rumoured to be launching in Europe in July. It should be cheaper than the Blackberry and has a good community.

Google around for more info on the Fire, I think it has had some quality issues but not sure if they have been resolved now.

I have a BlackBerry Playbook and it is amazing. It is fast, it runs QNX the same OS in Nuclear power plants. It is the only OS with a micro Kernel design, which means one app can't crash the system ever. The browser is number 1 for HTML5 support (check html5test.com). It can run Android apps, But there is all kinds of native apps and more coming all the time. For the price you can't get a better tablet. As for a support community, crackberry.com has everything you need to know about it.

I ended up buying this one for my son..
    http://www.harveynorman.ie/sony-s1-16gb.html
Got it in Powercity Naas, they gave me €20 off so it cost €330. Good value for the spec and is priced a lot higher in Argos and online.

What experience would that be? There are plenty of tablets available half the price of an iPad which would more than meet the needs of an average user.

The ipad pretty much blows away any cheap alternative, in my opinion you are better off just paying the money.

Of course it does and indeed any of the top tablets available will trump a bargain tablet. The idea of the thread is to let folks know of decent spec'd tablets that are easy on the pocket and perform reasonably well. A lot of folks would love a tablet but cannot afford an iPad so are looking for an alternative.

My advice is to save until you can afford one, dont waste your money.

I have an Nexus 7 and an iPad. Well I should say I had and iPad. Nexus 7 is a far better device for me and less that half the cost.

Not at all. It's one you'll find a lot of people have. Far more versitile and powerful device. A lot of people don't like closed restrictive software.

Believe me once you use the ipad 3 screen its hard to use anything else.

I have and I comfortably changed back. To me far more important things then a better screen. Maybe if Apple stopped concentrating on marketing ploys like retina screen they could really improve the iPad.
