How to go about getting a child baptised

We're the parents of a 4yr old who assumed she would be starting school in September - not to be. The reason - her not being baptised, which put her at the bottom of all the lists for our local schools. We live in Clontarf and the school we want her to go to is RC, like most of the rest of the country. We have now decided that to make sure she will get in next year we will have her baptised. We don't know where to turn, though. Should we just go to the local church and ask them to do it - wouldn't they refuse? We don't have a priest in the family and haven't been near a church in years. I'd greatly appreciate any useful advice on how we should proceed.

Were you told by each of the schools that the reason your child did not get a place in the school was because they were not baptised?

Not directly but according to their enrolment policies she came bottom, behind, in the case of the girls school, catholic girls from the catchment area, siblings and 4 other categories. All of her friends from playschool got places despite being younger than her. Parents have told us that the only guarantee of a place is to have her baptised thus bumping her into the first category. The schools themselves are very keen to avoid advising parents to get kids baptised and when we specifically asked the question it wasn't answered.

Well, if it is clearly written in their enrolement policy, as far as I know your child will not gain a place. I take it that there is a waiting list i.e. enrolement is full. If a school is not full that would change matters.

Have a chat with your local priest and seek advice on your options.
