Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood will retire after his next outing, which could come as soon as Friday, a source familiar with the situation told ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine.

The Cubs won't force him into a game, a source told ESPNChicago.com's Doug Padilla. The announcement will come after his next appearance. The team has said Wood is available to pitch Friday afternoon in the first game of the city series against the Chicago White Sox.

His 20 strike out game against the Astros is still the greatest single game accomplishment that I have ever seen in baseball. It's a shame that the Cubs destroyed you Woody, but you were fiercely loyal to them to the end. Congratulations on your retirement.

Legend of a player in the Chicago Area, I loved him.

Saw him pitch a few times in 2003. Always drama!

Fittingly enough, the last batter he faced he struck out.

He came in to face one batter and struck him out on 3 pitches...thats the way to do it!
