Using images on Facebook

    Hello folks,

This is my first time dropping by this forum and would like to get some advice if possible.

I had an idea for a while now for a website where people can post images that they have in their posession from the old days in Ireland. I was also planning to set up a Facebook page for the same.

While searching last night for black and white images of Ireland I came across photos belonging to someone on boards.ie. I contacted the person, explained my idea, and he replied kindly giving me permission to use the images as long as I am not selling them.

I am really looking for advice on the following questions.

If I post images on Facebook can I stop them from being downloaded. I know from building websites that I can stop images from being downloaded.

If I do post up images and someone else copies or downloads these images for sale or to use as promotion etc. (like in many of the threads here) can I somehow be held responsible.

Would it be a good enough to have some sort of diclaimer just to say that I have no control over people taking images for their own gain and that users who post images must be the owners of those images.

edit: I forgot to add. Would I be better off forgetting the whole idea even though I know it woul be very popular and interesting to people

no you can't, if someone can view the images then they can grab them. Either the original file or in the worst case a screengrab.

Thanks for replies guys. @ kenny, those images are fab and exactly the sort of thing I am looking for. Can I just take those images from flickr and post to facebook or a website or do I have to link directly to flickr. The images say no known copyright restrictions.

urbanlege. cool facebook page but not really what I am after

Click through to the NLI page. http://www.nli.ie/en/flickr-commons.aspx

"Images in our Commons photostream are available for research for a non-commercial purpose or private study. When using the images, please credit the National Library of Ireland and include the catalogue reference number of the item to help others access the original image or document.

If you are interested in high-quality reproductions, or commercial re-use of these images please contact Copying Services"

Honestly, it's not hard to find this information.

There's a page like that based where I live (Page is called "Drogheda down memory lane"). It's mostly got contributions from joe soap who is just happy to have his photo being seen. I don't think any professional photographers have put any images up on it (unless they were photos taken by their parents or such from the olden days).

I'd say find some content for it yourself (ie; your own photos) and if you know of any photographers ask them for their photos but ask them to watermark their photos first (so it makes the photo unusable for any commercial application, but gives the photographers information to any one interested in buying it).

The Drogheda page has been going on for a while now and seems successful enough, but as I say, I don't really see any professional photographs on there at all.

Honestly I'd avoid posting anything on facebook that you value. I stopped directly posting photos there instead I post a link from flickr to the page. I learned from having work stolen through facebook, in the end I got it back but it wasn't easy and it was a legal matter. Facebook themselves don't care about your rights as the creator or artist of an image so when something does get stolen don't expect them to get involved, instead stick to sites that deal with photography specifically like flickr and pix.ie.
