Depreciation on a new Golf 1.6 TDI

    Hi All,

I am crunching some numbers and trying to work out the depreciation on a new Golf Match 1.6 TDI 105BHP. The on the road price is €24,860.

I'm not looking for a debate on the merits of buying a new or a used car. I'm just trying to establish how much the car is likely to be worth after one year of average mileage. Would a 25 - 30% drop be expected??

    Thanks.

I would say more like 20-25%. Typically a car looses most in year one. After 3 years your looking at about 50%.

A new car looses more in depreciation in it's first year than at any other subsequent years of it's life. So if you are worried about deprectiation then buy a one year old one.

It will depreciate a bit but I'd imagine a 1.6TDi Golf would still draw in the masses in the future with its low tax, being diesel and being a Golf. I'd say the depreciation wouldn't be too bad.

Yes, that's very true. I'm just trying to establish roughly what the depreciation would be. I'm estimating in and around 25%.

Id calculate depreciation from the straight price rather than retail, there's a new golf on the way too so bear that in mind

Jesus thats shockingly near Passat money.

Yeah, if I was only keeping a car for a year, a 25k golf wouldn't be on the list

MkVII Golf arrives early next year. The MkVI Match is a run out special edition.

Is it loaded up with kit of something? Doesn't seem especially cheap

Edit, from the UK site, is it something similar here, vw Irish site doesn't seem to mention the match model

    http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/volkswagen-world/news/236/value-added-match-model-joins-volkswagen-golf-range

On top of the SE’s already generous specification which includes, among other items, ABS, ESP, seven airbags, Climatic air conditioning, alarm, cruise control and multi-device interface for connectivity to iPod or MP3 player, the Match adds unique 16-inch ‘Croft’ alloy wheels, a leather multifunction steering wheel, DAB digital radio receiver, Bluetooth system, front and rear parking sensors and an RCD 510 touchscreen stereo with six-disc CD autochanger.
The built-in Bluetooth and multifunction steering wheel ensures making and taking a call on the move is easy and safe.  The factory-fitted fully integrated system makes use of the RCD 510’s five-inch touchscreen to display information at the press of a button, while its hands-free profile compatibility means it can be twinned with more phones than previously, including Blackberry and iPhone.
The new Match model is available with the same engines as the outgoing SE trim.  This means customers can choose from a 1.4-litre TSI petrol with 122 PS, a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS or a 2.0-litre TDI with 140 PS.  Both the petrol and the 1.6-litre TDI are offered with Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG gearbox, while the 2.0-litre TDI can be specified with the six-speed DSG option.

Match model has been on sale in the UK for years. Don't think the Irish model is as well speced though. Think it sits here in between the Comfortline and Highline. They also have the Edition R to confuse things even more.

No such thing as a CL anymore AFAIK, the Match sits slightly below it, andf the Edition R just above it.

The Golf has always had a very good residual value. I don't do a whole lot of 12 month contracts, but the Golf and Qashqai are really the only two that work (well, the last time I ran figures they were anyway)

Even with a new model next year I wouldn't be too concerned about depreciation over 12 months - it will always be snapped up very quickly.

What would you say it'd be worth in a year drummer boy, say private sale

Hard one to say really, but with around 25k on the clock, in Match spec after a year I'd think it would retail at 20950, probably sell for close to 19k.

At the end of the day, its a Golf TDi. It'll always hold a premium against a Focus or Astra.

As i said, it's only one of two cars that seem to work over a twelve month basis.

Although looking at those figures again, am I a bit high?

Maybe drop both back by a grand...

Less again if selling privately or getting a garage to buy it off you.

What I'm getting at is say you buy the car for 24, trade it in for a new car, get 19k or so and buy a passat for 28, you've lost more than than the 5k as yu have no bargaining power off the new price

Given that diesel is the norm now, I wonder how would a 1 year old golf match compare with a new golf base next year?

Would you get 19k as a trade in against a Passat? I'd imagine that's more like 17.5/18k.....

Something that you'd have to consider here though is the fact you'd be moving up a grade of car from Golf to Passat, which of course will cost you.

As usual though, you're always better off selling the car youself, and then walking back into the showroom with a wad of cash in yer sky rocket.

So back to the difficult question, how much do you reckon it'd lose in 12 months?

    A) as a 'having a car for a year and then going to Australia' situation

    B) as a trading up like for like getting the same level of discount this year and off the 2013 equivelant next year

Example, 2011 golf cl TDI asking €17250
You'd surely get it for €16750
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3344060

What would this have cost straight last year, €23000 or so?

Yeah, I was thinking the car is worth 17k if you have to dump it quickly. So if you buy it at 24, and sell it at 17 it's costing 7k over 12 months...

Maybe 750 quid more as a trade in against a new car.

We can say close to 30% so

Like houses, it only matters if you're actually selling.

Thanks very much guys. Around 30% is what I will calculate with. Much appreciated.
