Hi, looking for advise from audi specialists.

Got a car (a6 1998) with abs light on and flashing red break light. From research I found out that its usually abs module thats faulty. Got another one, fit it in.
The warning lights still the same and no abs. Got it scanned. It cant communicate with module. Is there anything else I could check? Wires into module and connections looks fine.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Is it just the ABS that you can't communicate with? Can you communicate with other control modules in the car?

not sure, didnt do scan myself. the airbag light is on too but I know that seats where swaped and seen the end of airbag wires that should connect to seat airbags were bypassed ( with resistor I think if I'm correct)
so I think it said broken circuit or something similar

I thought vag abs modules needed to be recoded when you replace/fit a different one? Maybe thats the problem but I suppose you need to be able to see it to be able to code it

    I'm in Blanchardstown Dublin.

I've heard about recoding but I dont think it has to be. The only thing is the part number has to be the same.

You need to find out whether the communication problem is just with the ABS module or whether it is across all modules in the car. Until you know this then we can't really help you any further.

If it is just the ABS module then you need to check fuses and power feeds to the ABS module. If it is across all modules then you need to fix that comms issue before you can scan the ABS unit to see what the problem is.

If it is a general comms issue then the first thing to ask is does the car have an aftermarket radio fitted? On VAG cars of that age some non-factory radios block communications with diagnostic equipment because they send a 12v feed down the wire used for diagnostic communication which then stops that line from working for any module in the car. So the thing to do in this case is remove the radio and try a scan with it unplugged.

I'll get back about this, have to get it scanned again

So I'm bringing this back again.

Was scanning with vag com after taking the radio out. I can communicate with few controlers including abs, airbag some electrics etc. No problem with scanning the engine.

When very first time connected it says:

All ok, K1 K2 ok, only CAN not ready. Maybe thats got something to do with it?

Help needed ASAP before NCT re-test!

So you can only communicate with the engine and no other controllers?

    so scanned again common modules:

    ENGINE OK
    ABS-NO
    AUTO HVAC-OK
    CENT. ELECT.-NO
    STEERING WHEEL-NO
    INSTRUMENTS-OK
    AUX HEAT-NO
    IMMOBILIZER-OK
    CENTR. LOCKS-OK
    RADIO-NO

    airbags:

    3 Faults Found:

01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N199)
    32-10 - Resistance too High - Intermittent
01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N199)
    29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
    00532 - Supply Voltage B+
    07-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent

I then disconnected abs module and it let me connect to airbags! But nothing else changed. That abs module should be ok though.
