Hey folks, any help much appreciated. I was running OS X 10.5 on my previous laptop that sadly met with an untimely end (Turns out pouring a pint of water isn't a good thing for it?!). Thankfully I was good at backing up so nothing was really lost. So, have a new laptop all shiny and its running OSX Lion. I restored from my last time machine backup and everything is running perfectly. However, I've only noticed now that iphoto, and Garageband dosent seem to be the new version. The app store icon keeps telling me there are 2 updates available (these two prpgrammes), yet when I go to update them it says I have to purchase them first. I thought with the new OS the newer versions would already be on the computer?? Anyone know how I get to update them? For free obviously since I have the OS I dont feel I should pay for the newer versions if I can avoid it?

iPhoto and Garageband are part of iLife not OS X. Your previous Mac probably had iLife '08 bundled with the OS X Snow Leopard install that came on your system. Clearly iLife '11 is not being bundled with OS X Lion at the moment. The App Store will have iLife '11 available for (paid) download. You should be able to re-install iLife '08 from the install media of your previous Mac or possibly from your backups.

You should be able to download updates for non-Apple Store purchased iWork apps via Software Update.

I had the same problem, I installed the second disc that you got with the mac that says applications. Should come back for you then.

Thanks for the replies folks, I just presumed the ilife package would be included with the new laptop as any previous one I bought had it bundled with it was just surprised. As to discs, well, from what I could see there was no discs that came with the laptop I just presumed it was all something to do with icloud or something, ill root through the stuff again as I still have all the packaging, stranger and stranger, to the box room!!!

New Macs do come bundled with iLife. You just have download them from the App Store. It will assign them to your Apple ID.

Ah. I didn't realise it was still bundled (albeit separately). That said I never use it myself so I wouldn't have gone looking for it.

Nice one went to the app store searched for ilife and was able to just hit the update button and its installing away, cheers folks. Still curious about those discs though have to keep rooting. :)

I just had this issue with a new (refurb) iMac, which flagged that there were updates in the Mac App Store for iPhoto and Garageband, but then told me I needed to purchase them.

Turns out that the Mac App Store app is badly designed, and if you go to the Purchased tab (rather than the Updtes tab, which is the one with the “2” flag on it), you can “Accept” them into your AppleID, which will mean that you can update them without (re)purchasing them.

I don't think Apple include discs with their new Macs. Trying to focus on the Mac App store. I got a Macbook Pro last september and didn't get any discs with it.

That's strange, they're quite handy if you ever need to do a reinstall of the OS if things get to slow. I find it's just easier to slot in a disc and let it do it's thing than to download a massive file and crap....

You'll only need to download a large update after Lion if your HDD dies. Other than that there is the recovery partition.

Yep mine has the recovery partition so no need for discs. iLife available and updated through the Mac App Store.
