Sorry - this is bound to have been discussed before but i cannot seem to find the answers I am looking for.

What are the rules for selling cattle with regards to TB tests, Brucellosis tests, BVD tests, etc. Can somebody in the know give a quick rundown of each and for different ages of cattle, etc?

    Thanks in advance!

calves over 6 wks have to be tb tested

heifers under 18 months only have to be tb tested to sell, older than that they have to be blood tested also,if not selling you only have to tb test till theyre 2yrs old

heifers/cows over 2yo have to be tb and brucellosis tested in order to sell

    bullocks only tb tested

i may be wrong on some of this so i may stand corrected but most of it i think is right:D

TB test lasts for 12 months.
Brucellosis test lasts for 60 days.
BVD test isnt compulsory to sell an animal but it might increase the value of an animal.

I am selling a PBR Limo Bull, 12 months old, what tests do I need? Is TB test enough? Do I need to blood test for BVD?
    Any information welcome.

A fertility test would be handy if he doesnt have one already

You can sell him with just a TB test but a few others like Johnes/Lepto & IBR would be a plus to have done. I assume he's already tested for BVD through a notch tag if he's only 12 months.

If he has been TB tested, that is all that is compulsory in order to sell him.
Breeding bulls and heifers don't have to be blooded under 24months.

Best of luck with him. Are you hoping to sell privately?

Johnes won't show up at that age on a test

Not a big concern in beef herd
Spread through milk so 1 infected cow going into a pool of milk being fed to calves could infect the all the calves

    A different perspective. :)

Not a big POLITICAL concern in beef herd. Spread through milk AND DUNG so 1 ON AVERAGE MUCH OLDER infected cow MIXING WITH ALL THAT YEARS CALVES could infect the all the calves.

we offer to blood the dam of the bull we are selling for johnes. Makes me laugh to see ads that bulls/heifers are blood tested negative for johnes, it wont show up under 2 years of age on a blood test

animal has to have a bvd test under the scheme to sell in the mart

Seems wrong to me that a calf that has tested positive to BVD cannot be sold ex farm/in a mart yet a 4 yo+ cow that has not been tested can be. She could be a carrier

    Don't know to be honest.
The only experience that I have with Johnes is from years ago, having to ensure that:
1- semen that I imported was only from Johnes negative bulls - Dept requirement.
2- in the latter years, bulls that I sent to Tully passed the test.

Hi Muckit, yes selling privately. have agreed to sell yesterday. his Pedigree - Sire HCA and dam by VGZ. Tarvis and Dauphin in dams in back breeding.

I just heard HCA is gone off the AI list is does anyone know if that is true? if so should it make my animal more valuable............too late wondering now I suppose.

Have 2 two year old bullocks for selling. Was hoping to sell privately, had a clear herd test last month, but they were not blood tested. Do i need to get them blood tested now before selling?

    Hi all,
usually fatten cows for factory thinking of sending a few 6 year old plus culled cows to mart at the end of month. TB tested in March but they would never have been BVD tested given their age.... is the BVD test a requirement for such cows being sold at mart?

    Many thanks.

If I bought a bullock in may 16. The seller had tested him in march. Do I have to test him again before selling him to the factory in January 2017?

No, as long as he is 'in test' he should be fine. You might get away with it even if he's out of test by a few months, as long as the majority of your herd is ok.

Presumably those cows have had calves that have been tested for BVD. In that way the cows were tested as if the cow was PI the calves would have been too.
Even if they hadn't any calves there's no requirement to test them afaik. The chances of a PI living to be that age anyway are supposed to be fairly low anyway

So is there any brucellosis testing done at all in the country now?

Hopefully cattle which are imported into the country are being tested for it. I wonder is it possible to test animals in factories after they're killed?
