I'm thinking of starting to train in Shotokan Karate and was looking at a crowd called JKS Ireland. The reason why I'm considering them is that they have a dojo (Hombu Dojo) in Dublin 6 which is handy enough for where I live. They have more clubs around Ireland and also in England and Scotland as well so they seem to be a large enough outfit.

Does anyone know anything about them. Do they have a good reputation? Are they a McDojo?

JKS karate dojo in sandyford opposite the sandyford luas stop. Instructor is a JKS 4th dan black belt with over 20yrs experience. Very humble guy and friendly:-)
Classes are good fun. Lots of basics, kata (with practice in possible applications), and cardio work to finish each class. Its a small dojo and you need to contact before truning up.

Its not a massive difference if you train JKS ISI SII WSKF or any other shotokan affiliation group. Go for a club thats suits you in terms of times and locations try and if there is a good instructor and group of students keep going, if not find somewhere else.

They are most certainly not a McDojo.

The JKS is headed by Masao Kagawa, 8th Dan, a legendary karate expert. The JKS itself was formed when the JKA split up after the death of Nakayama, and it was originally headed by Tetsuhiko Asai who would have been one of the top instructors among the JKA.

Scott Langley is the head of JKS Ireland & UK. He has an excellent reputation. I trained in just one of his classes, and have seen him in action at courses with Kagawa. He's an excellent technician. I'm not sure who gives most of the classes in Ranelagh, but the Dojo looks excellent.

Give it a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I used to train with the JKS in their Ranelagh club; for Shotokan it has got to be one of the best dojos about.
Scott is a legend but for my money Edd offers a more varied perspective - this is probably due to his background having cross trained in other martial arts. He teaches great application of technique that I think is sometimes lacking in traditional Karate.
    ....of course there's always judo!!!

Id advise you to train with jks ireland. i have been part of the organisation for 7 years and would recomend it to anyone as it one of the few internationally recognised organisations in the country. their are also several other clubs in ireland in the jks such as in the midlands, meath, galway and mayo. it is the best shotokan organisation in ireland and is alot better organised than some of the other karate groups in the country
