Just heard about this earlier on NPR radio, apparently it started in Austin, Texas recently and it sounds like it could be good craic, they said it was based on Mystery Theatre 3000. The cinema's programme a season of awful films and people are encouraged to rip the piss out of them by texting their comments which appear live as subtitles on the screen straight away, (people aren't allowed to shout them out, be too disruptive etc). The one that the guy from the cinema was talking about showing next was Point Break, I've never seen it but the dialogue in the clip they played was hilariously bad, it was something like:

Patrick Swayze "You can't just walk up to them, you have to face them off"

Keana Reeves "You mean the FBI are going to teach me how to surf"!

Could be worth trying over here, any Irish film would be a good one to include :D, maybe start with Charlie Cassanova?

The light from people playing with their phones is the single most annoying thing in cinemas for me, so count me out.

Ordinarily at a film of course, but the people who attend are going because thats what its about, not to seriously watch or reappraise the film, I had a look at a few of the Mystery Theatre 3000s on Netflix which the guy on the radio said its based on and some of the stuff was hilarious ( a bloke and 2 robots watch and comment on old trashy films), now the people on that show are probably funnier than the average punter but I'm sure it could work. I've never seen Point Break as I said but yer man said that the dialogue especially by Gary Busey is hilariously bad.

Yelling out stuff can be fun too, screenings of "The Room" are comedy gold.

The films were always the best part of MST3000 - the voiceovers and jokes were very inconsistent. Still, for introducing me to Manos: The Hands of Fate, I am forever grateful.

Sure drop along to the Hecklevision showing of Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, you might change your mind :D.

I love MST3K, not sure how funny the average punter would be though so not sure if this would work.

And even if you're particularly good at coming up qith quips how fast can you type it out and get it up there? I imagine the moment would be lost unless you had them prepared in advance.

In theory it's a great idea but in reality I can imagine allot of people putting up "john is gay" and "boobs" type messages. Unless they are screened in which case like AnonoBoy said the delay would cause allot of jokes to be posted too late.

The single best heckle I ever heard was watching Jurassic Park in a packed theatre:

Dr. Ian Malcom: "God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs. "

Dr. Ellie Slater: "Dinosaurs eat man... woman inherits the earth."

Random bloke at the back of the cinema: "..and Woman crashes Earth into the nearest tree..."

    The place collapsed laughing

I can't fully remember what film (it might have been rules of engagement) but somebody in attendance had obviously seen the film before but it was a courtroom scene and the the lawyer said something and the courtroom erupted just at it was getting quiet some shouted a perfect "fuucking hell" Ala father Ted.

Probably had to be there but the cinema broke into hysterical laughter for a good 15 seconds.
