AFAIR, The "recommended" interval is the same for all focus engines but there is a school of thought that suggest the interval is far to long for the diesels.

A misinformed school of thought IMO. I have never seen a belt break on a Mk1 Focus diesel and we look after plenty of them. Our own 2003 1.8TDDI work van has 223k miles on it and gets driven hard every day by several different drivers. It has had the belt changed twice more or less at the recommended interval. Both times the old belt was found to be in very good condition upon removal. The old 1.8 diesel in the Mk1 and Mk2 Mondeo was a different story however. They loved to break timing belts...

I don't disagree. However, the average interval across all cars of that era was much shorter on both petrols and diesels than it was on the focus. With stories of catastrophic damage from broken timing belts not changed on time, I can well understand why people would be nervous about a long interval.
