My mate decided to upgrade to a new gaming laptop recently since his old XPS be about 6 or 7 years old now but he refuses to go back to Dell because there simply too expensive for configuring your own laptop and since he can buy it in cash this time he wants to know where you can buy custom configurable laptops online that'll be cheaper then going to Dell again.
He has a gaming desktop and all but he does alot of traveling around in between college and work but gerneally has alot of free time at both for abit of gaming.

I used to lurk on http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/ a bit, you often find people making threads with similar requirements to whatever you're after. Might be worth a browse. I'm a bit out of the loop with regards to good gaming laptops myself unfortunately.
Edit: just had a look at a thread or two and found

Some of the MSI laptops are good - not customisable, but they can be good for the money.
I think scan.co.uk do a small selection of customisable laptops as well.

Seems like pcspecialist is the way to go and since he's a student he got a copy of windows 7 dirt cheap thats good for 2 pc's (only has it installed on his desktop atm) so he can configure it to not come with an OS to save that little bit more.

Give that a look. Heard of it before. Not sure what they're like though.

God no. Overpriced as hell and they still do old pentium rigs for €1000.

When I was looking for a laptop, Deviltech is the site I found, they use the clevo/msi barebones and they have great prices.

If you know someone in the USA that is coming back within the next month or two you could try the Lenovo USA site.
I customised a laptop for half the price it is here and my friend brought it over for me.

    Hi IrishMetalhead,

Check out rockdirect.com. They sell re-badged Clevos, and they are based in UK, also decent 3 year warranty. Got a laptoop off them years ago-huuuuge pig of a lap warmer with a pentium 4 @ 3.4 and 2 DVD drives in it.:D I found them very good to deal with.

Have a look at HIDEvolution. They're a reseller that do a lot of Dell and Alienware systems. They definitely ship to Ireland. If you give them a call, you can mention that you want to ship it here, maybe mention customs charges, maybe they'll... give you more information. :)

got another idea now since we have an os covered, if we can just get the barebones and bits ourselves (CPU, GOU, RAM & SSD) and build it ourselves it'll work out lot cheaper plus we can reuse his hdd and net card from his xps, but where can we buy just the barebones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It won't. I've looked into this at length. No-one really does it. OCZ I think it was had a couple a few years back, but no-one will sell bare-bones shells, unless you want to go trawling though eBay looking at thousands of items of questionable quality.

You're best bet is someone like XoticPC, Origin, or HID.

http://www.pwnpcs.co.uk/ or PC specialist as already mentioned are the best.

I just noticed that you can choose a laptop without an OS. This is ideal for Linux users.

    Has anyone used these? http://www.novatech.co.uk

You can customise the laptop and choose no OS.
