DVB-T Tuner for Saorview

I have a 6 year old Jvc lcd tv here which managed to pick up the digital radio stations and only the audio from the TV stations. Having found out about the mpeg4 issue, Im looking into a quick and easy fix to get Saorview on this set. (Especially with the Euros coming up in HD on RTE)

I don't want to fork out for a new TV as I have a new Samsung on sky in another room, and don't want to bother with Saorview boxes or outside aerials.

Just like some opinions on this bit of kit - would it do the job?

you will still need an aerial.

you would be better off buying a saorview approved box.

depending on where you live (proximity to transmitters ) an indoor aerial may work.

If the tv has managed to pick up the radio stations, OP must have some kind of aerial (or something acting as one).

As Peter Rhea says, if op is picking up radio stations there must be some kind of signal coming from an aerial of some sort... Op ur cheapest option might be to switch your tv's(even just for the Euro 2012), if you samsung tv is only new and was bought in the ROI the dvb-t tuner in it should have no problem picking up saorview.

Get a proper Saorview box and not a piece of Generic that has no Sale-Of-Goods Returns, no assurance it's compatible next week even if works today.

It also lacks features and doesn't "convert" the TV. It's just a cheaper set-box.

If it's not on this list don't waste money on it.

Yes Im using a indoor aerial and the JVC set picks up radio and TV audio with that. When I put the indoor aerial on my Samsung set, I can get all the Saorview channels perfectly. I have a clear view of the Mt. Leinster mast and the signal is strong. I have this old JVC set though and would like to be able to just get the Irish digital channels on it as Ill have this TV to myself.
I already pay a Sky sub and have a dish AND a broadband aerial on my roof, I cannot be doing with another aerial / or getting another STB for the sake of a few channels I already have.

Would this device be compatible with Irish digital tv? Aside from the generic / no guarantees nature of it....?

Looking at the spec I'd say yes.

You don't need another aerial, you existing one can feed both sets with a simple splitter.

That device is not fully compatible. No MHEG, channels probably in the 800's, clock problems in the summer probably, and possibly wrong mains plug. As Watty says get a Saroview approved set top box and have no worries.

And it *IS* a Setbox. Just a very small one with separate PSU brick, very cheaply made. The once off cash saving isn't worth it. By the time you pay postage, add mains adaptor you are saving little to have an inferior product with no 2 year guarantee. You know if you buy one in Ireland they have to replace or repair for at least 2 years no matter what they claim the store policy is if a fault (or incompatibility if certified) due to manufacture or design.

    @ markest
That one isn't Saorview. It's just another cheap Generic mini-setbox that has unknown safety, unknown PSU standard, no MHEG5 and unknown degree of compatibility. If it "tunes" picture and sound today it's still very bad value and high risk.

It doesn't have the correct mains plug. There is a good reason why gear sold in UK & Ireland must have the rectangular 3 pin plug as standard. No assurance of ANY valid compatibly, safety or Interference compliance (PSU).

Comreg told me just last week that Interference complaints have DOUBLED in the last year and they admit it is the tip of the iceberg.

It looks very similar (almost identical) to the two I have which I've been using for over a year now in conjuction with indoor aeriels. Mine had a european style plug though.

They work fine and I haven't had any issues with them. Your mileage may vary of course and if you want complete peace of mind as well as the full saorview aertel then go for an approved box.
