Contact lenses for dry eyes?

    Hi folks

Not looking for any medical advice!

Has anyone here with dry eyes found a particular brand of contact lens to be comfortable?

I occasionally wear disposable lens on a night out. Just wondering what brands have you found good?

And what lubricant do you use?

Anyone with experience of a contact lens optician who takes an interest in patients with dry eyes could you please PM me with details?

    Many thanks.

Try a silicone hydrogel lens. There are now a few brands that make them in daily disposables. They are a lot more expensive but if you only wear them occasionally it doesn't work out so bad. They don't dry out as much or as quickly and let way more oxygen in= whiter eyes. Just ask your optician, they should all be able to accommodate you.
Bear in mind though that some people will get dry eye regardless of the lens type. Use lots of refresh drops ;)

Try either proclear, j&j trueye. failing that in the next 6 months ciba (total one)and b&l (biotrue) are about to release their new daily on the market.

Siobhan Eustace knows her stuff about dry eyes. I think she's based in Kilkenny but also practices in Dublin.

Dry eye and contact lenses are an every day issue for most practices.
Call into your optician and talk to the optician explain your problems and see if they have any ideas/alternative to resolve it for you.
If they don't seem interested they go down the road tilll you find someone who does.
At least alternative lenses should be tried like the ones suggested above.

In severe cases of dry eye which are rare. Look at your diet for water intake and omega 3&6. Look at your exposure to air con convection heating total computer use. Underlying medical condition and medication could make these symptoms worse. Then look at using drops, moisturing gel etc.

I second Blackeyedpeat and add that 40-50% of population now have some trouble with dry eye. Symptoms increase with age, computer use and contact lens wear. All opticians deal with it regularly but some more enthusiastically than others.
I wear J&J 1.Day Acuvue Moist for astigmatism, which I personally have found more comfortable than other daily disposable lenses but mostly wear my glasses.
Eyes do vary a lot though so what works for one does not necessarily work for another.

I use Acuvue Oasys, they're fortnightly lenses.

I've asked a few different opticians about them, and they reckon they're best on the market for dry eyes. Especially when you over-wear them as much as I do! :o

I find them much better than any I've tried in the past (and I've been wearing contacts over ten years now.)

I mentioned to my GP today that I was taking flaxseed oil on my optician's recommendation, and he advised me to watch the calories involved very carefully. I was taking 3 x 1000 mg, which turns out to be 2400 calories daily - my full daily recommended calories!

Is anyone aware of a 'low calorie' equivalent for flax seed oil?

I think you may have been overdosing! One capsule /sprinkle one your porridge should be enough.

I just eat ground flaxseed, rather than the capsules. Recommended daily serving size is two tablespoons, I have it mixed in with Greek yoghurt or cottage cheese, or sometimes on a salad. It doesn't really taste of anything, so it's easy to eat. I can't remember the exact amount of calories - it's somewhere around 180 I think.

There's absolutely no way that's right, 1000mg = 1gramme, you're not getting your daily caloric intake from 3 grammes!

The label says '1-3 capsules three times daily'.

Ah, you're right. I was reading the information per 100ml. The calories per capsule (1000 mg) are 8kcal. Cheers

The monthly day and night lenses were the ones I found good.
Also I have tried a lot of eye drops and the best one is Focus Aquify which you can buy in Specsavers or on line.
You have to throw away the bottle 8 weeks after opening

I wear these as well but didn't think they could be used at night, do you have them in when sleeping?

Yes I do. I think they are primarily marketed as fortnightly lenses if you take them out each night. However if worn at night you only get a week out of them. Best see what your optician recommends for you

I have no issue with mine. I don't get dry eyes and my optician never has any issues when I go for a check up
