Interested in how common this is.
In this context, product placement is where you receive money for recommending a product or service, under the express condition that you dont indicate you are being paid for the recommendation.

(Blogs) Have you been offered money to give an apparently independent recommendation 5 votes

Yes I am paid to recommend products, without it being apparent as advertising

Have been contacted and have declined, it feels like they are trying to buy a positive review.

    That would be unethical.

Product placement in traditional media is regulated (and sometimes blatently obvious that it could only be placement).

It does get a little blurry in some areas. For example, all those travel articles you read in newspapers involves the writer getting a free holiday. Same with tech reviews - often the reviewer will get some free kit etc.

What code of ethics covers bloggers?

Most blogging platforms impose their own terms and conditions:
    - no adult cotent unless it's behind a warning
    - no copyright violations
    - no hate speech
    - etc.

but I've yet to see one that says "no product placements".

I've written positive (and negative :o) posts about products that I like, and have also posted on behalf of an advertising agency asking me to do so. Sometimes with a clear notice that this is the case, sometimes not depending on the product. I return I get paid, a small present, the product or (in the last case) a 3 day full-expenses paid trip in a car.

There is no ethical regulation about this and it is allowed. You also do not need to indicate that you are writing on behalf of an advertising company, but you can if you feel it's needed.

In general, it's a matter of personal view. If you like to disclose to your readers that it is a "sponsored" post, because you feel it's the right to do, then do so.

Many blogs are writing about products/shows/bands/etc whilst being paid or offered goodies in return. In the end, it's about what feels right to you and appropriate for your own blog/publication.

I mean it would be unethical full stop.

It's general ethics that you would expect from somebody who writes and publishes in the public domain. Sure there's no formal set of rules and it's up to each medium to set their own rules and standards.

Many blogs are based around the personality of the blogger and I would suspect that to maintain credibility that they should declare any relevant commercial interests in their content.

BTW there's plenty of hate speech and copyright violations in blogs!
