    Show 40.

Hi everyone, given the busy 7 days of rugby we decided to do 2 shows this week. This episode is essentially a review of last weekend's semi-finals, a preview of the Amlin Challenge Cup Final and we also discuss the issue of the European competition proposals being put forward.

The second episode this week should be up on Thursday night, this will preview the Heineken Cup Final and also look at the other news of the week e.g. summer tour squads.

    Anyway, enjoy: http://talkingrugby.podomatic.com/entry/2012-05-15T14_24_07-07_00
For the big week that it is, we thought it deserved 2 shows! In the first of 2 episodes this week, Talking Rugby looks back on last weekend's domestic action and looks ahead to the Amlin Challenge Cup final between Toulon and Biarritz. We also discuss the new Anglo/French proposals regarding Heineken Cup qualification.

Doc is once again the host with Dave expected back for the later episode this week. Joining Doc is Alan from Luxembourg, Mike from England and Daithí from France.

Our second show this week will feature a comprehensive preview of the Heineken Cup final, so keep a lookout for that!

    COMING UP ON THE SHOW:

    RABODIRECT PRO12 SEMI-FINALS REVIEW
0:00 - Munster were demolished away to Ospreys on Friday night in what was a dark day for any Munster fan. Alan is unsurprisingly gloomy about Munster's performance.
13:00 - Leinster ground out a win against Glasgow in a forgettable semi-final.

    AVIVA PREMIERSHIP SEMI-FINALS REVIEW
20:00 - Harlequins got a late victory over Northampton Saints, who have lost yet another key cup tie. Are the Saints bottlers?
28:10 - Leicester beat Saracens at Welford Road, with a stunning performance from 19 year old sensation George Ford guiding them to victory.

    FRENCH RUGBY
32:40 - Daithi reviews the final round of the Top14 regular season.
36:15 - We look ahead to the Amlin Challenge Cup Final between Toulon and Biarritz at the Stoop.

    SPECIAL ISSUE
47:30 - We talk about the English/French proposals to reform European competitions, including how to split competition money and the number of clubs qualifying for the Heineken Cup from the various leagues.

If there is a Leinster fan out there that wants to come on the HEC final preview show tomorrow night, drop me a PM.

You'll need a skype acccount, a reliable internet connection and preferably a headset (sound quality is vital!).

The segment on the potential changes to the Heineken Cup was very interesting, I hadn't heard how the money gets divided up before.

Hats off to Doc for some excellent editing, he really sorted the wheat from the chaff laugh.gif. We could have been there all night :pac::pac::pac:

Thank you for the feedback :)

Any opinion, positive or negative is welcome ;)

Time/editing & above all making the whole thing "listenable" (is that a word or GUBU :p ) kept it short but I don't think I'm exagerating if I said we could have passed half the show or more talking about the positives/negatives of any changes to the Euro Cups.

30th of June & the 18th of August, watch those dates

  • reason I like this so much that it's unashamedly not-trying-to-be-overly-unbiased. The mix of people provides the "unbias" as opposed to what they have to say.

It's like listening to a group of oul friends sitting around a pint.

    Thanks Emmet

I agree that having a balance of backgrounds and opinions is important. Bias, per se, is a difficult thing to quantify - I guess we all have our own opinions and backgrounds, and where they become 'bias' is open to question.

Having a balance of opinion and backgrounds, at least acts as a countermeasure.

I'd like to think that by and large we are all (or at least the overwhelming majority!) passionate about our own teams, but prepared to see the faults and to acknowledge the merit in what others do.

  • I'm saying that the mix is a far far better way of providing objectivity than asking people to tone down their opinions. I think it works far better having people saying what they actually think, and having a good blend of people's opinions rather than having everyone preaching from the same hymn sheet. Makes it a discussion rather than a speech.

It also forces people to be objective. I was commending the "natural objectivity" of the show without the "overt attention to PC -un-biasness" that show up elsewhere.

No hope for me being positively biased towards Munster at the moment anyway!

Over here in Luxembourg my sound hasn't been great because I'm using my laptop and not my home PC back in Ireland. I've been using the same headset all the time.

Incidentally, my internet is much faster over here so it must be to do with laptop vs PC.

Barring when one of us omits to mute his mic I can't say I noticed a huge difference in sound quality. I know I was pretty blocked up with a bit of a cold & I also have trouble finding my words in English which makes for some uncomfortable pauses.....................like.......... that......... :D.
Could you share your thoughts in a bit more detail? here or by PM? Anything that helps the show is welcome :).

I sound like I'm speaking from inside a cave sometimes!

FYI everyone, the second episode this week is being recorded tonight. We're hoping to have it published by tonight too.

We're gonna leave the Munster issue (in the grand scheme of things) for a later show when we can assess everything in detail: the current structures, the coaching, players coming through, reasons for the injury crisis etc.

if anyone has any quick question for the panel, post it here. Preferably related to the HEC final as it's our main topic.

Will Ulster be able to disrupt the breakdown enough to stop Leinster getting clean, fast ball to work with?

How Much difference will leinster's superior bench make?

Will Fez's and Bod's knees hold out for the full match

Why has leinster's line out suffered since thorn arrived?

    keep them coming lads!

  • Will Joe Schmidt take the Ireland job or is simply too difficult to ask players who are used to playing winning rugby to continue to do so in a new Jersey? Blending 3 styles, a la a Neapolitan ice cream.

Which side's scrum and lineout do you think will come out on top? How do you see the backrow battle and breakdown playing out? Will Leinster play Jennings or McLaughlin and which one of Boss or Reddan will start. Is there any reason for McLaughlin to start Humphreys over Jackson?

If the rumours that bod won't play are true will ulster have parity in the back line?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Show done, put some of the questions to the panel. Like last time, a few of them were more or less covered in the discussion.

Thanks Emmet, now all I can think about is getting a Neapolitan Ice Cream!
