    Afternoon all,

Heading off on cruise later this year and Rome (Citaveccia) is one of the stops. As the port is over an hour away from the city i was wondering if anyone has had an experience of traveling independantly into the city, and is it worth making your own way around(ie how much ground can you cover) in the short few hours you have on shore.

Trying to bypass the expensive cruise line arranged excursions but i still want to hit the Colosseum, st Peters, Trevi fountain, pantheon etc, any tips would be much appreciated.

How long would you have in the city, accounting for the time lost coming in from and back to the port?

All the major sites you mentioned above can be done on a whistle stop tour in 3/4 hours.
I broke off from an escorted tour to actually go inside the Coloseum (which wasnt on the itinery), walk the Forum, stop at the Trevi fountain and Spanish steps and the Pantheon. I skipped the Vatican as that was done on a different day. All this was done in about 2 hours on foot and not at a breakneck pace either.

Can't help you RE travel to and from port though....

We got the train into the city. It was about a 5 minute walk from the port entrance. Worked out very well.

    Thanks guys

I would imagine 6/7 hours in the city all things considered, so it seems very do-able. Would you reccomend hop on- hop off busses or simply use the metro?

The Metro is the best if you have a few days but If I was in Rome for just a few hours I wouldnt want to spend anytime underground. For all the sites bar the Vatican you can easily walk to them as they are in a fairly compact area. The Vatican is a little further north so a bus would be ideal.

I was in Civitavecchia last Wednesday, and there is absolutely nothing there, so definitely take in a tour of Rome, funds permitting. We decided just to roam around the town as we couldnt justify the price of the cruise line's own tours, so I would definitely plan one myself for the next time. The Italian transport system is apparently not the most reliable, and just last week, we sailed away and left people in Italy because they didnt make it back to the ship. Have a great cruise!

Buy yourself a walking tour map, there are several routes from one hour to 3 or 4 hours which will give you a great flavour of the city. Don't buy water but bring an empty flask, the stand pipes throughout the city are flowing with free crystal clear cool water. Just fill up and go. be overly cautious of the many coffee shops and bars....very easy to be fleeced by hidden charges.
If you are doing the Vatican, PM me for the address of a brilliant blog we used.(will have to search for it) Tips galore and even shortcuts that actually saved hours in queues.
Great city, can't believe I waited so long to go there....definitely will go back.
