CHAFFOTEAUX MX2 24 FF

ok I have been trying to repair a CHAFFOTEAUX MX2 24 FF for a week or so now. The boiler goes through its starting sequence and gets as far as the gas valve opening but no spark for ignition. What makes it worse is that this is an intermittent fault. If I kill the power to the boiler and try and start it up sometimes it will light and could do so four or five times in a row but eventually it will stop starting and go into lock out.

I have replaced the spark generator origionaly and ended up with the same symptoms. I replaced spark electrode and leads with no joy and also the thermocouple with the very same fault. I have now gone back with a pcb and fitted that but this time it only gets as far as sensing the air pressure switch and goes to lock out.

I have done all the electrical checks and soundness tests and all came up fine. The water pressure is fine (1.5bar)
Any advice from any one would be much appreciateded as this is the first one of these I have ever had to repair and at this stage is wrecking my head.

    Did you replace both boards?

You need to replace both as old and new are not compatible.

Check the gas valve for "sulphidation".

Little flakes of corroded copper pipe from north sea gas!!!

Plays merry hell with the solenoids.

And have a quick check on the voltage too.

Had a suprima with the new board, gave me a headache at both ends because of that:o

They have a filter before the gas valve, the gas valves on the MX2 are pretty bullet proof, the 3 solinoides on the brittony system/combi can stick and a bit of baby powder can help with that.
