Lost a webdomain, now what?

Not sure if this is the best place for this, if not - apologies.

I am the secretary of my scout group and we have/had a website, the renewal of which was supposed to go through at the end of last month. The hosting package renewed with no issues, but the domain name did not, there is an issue with the Visa card being used, the verified by Visa stuff came up, meaning I needed to track down the information from our treasurer. Unfortunately he was on holidays and in the meantime the domain expired fully. :(

I finally got all of the details needed for the credit card this morning, I went to re-register the domain name but it turns out somebody else has registered it. I checked the whois record, it seems that it's now registered with following details:
    • Registrar: REGISTER.IT SPA
    • Whois Server: whois.register.it
    • Referral URL: http://we.register.it
    • Status: clientDeleteProhibited, clientTransferProhibited, clientUpdateProhibited

Where do I stand from here? Do we need to get a different domain name? Or is there a way to reclaim this one? We also have email accounts set up under the original domain name (using google apps) and they've all gone too now, until I can sort this out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    You have 2 options:
    1. Cut your losses, get a new domain name, change your email addresses.
    2. Buy your old domain name back. This is a typical thing, where people register recently-expired domains, in the hope the owner will want it enough to pay for it. If you visit the site now, is there some sort of landing page? They'll probably try to sell it back to you.

FFs, they've little to be at?

How do you check for recently expired domains?

PM me the domain name (or just post it here). You should have a grace period once a domain expires depending on the top level domain (.com / .ie etc.).

Ya, we did have a grace period, that's when I was trying to locate our credit card details and then the SNAFU with verified by visa kicked in...

    Domain is stfinbarrsscouts.com fwiw

Thats a strange one I have to say, do you have specific dates that the domain was supposed to expire on.

You should have a redemption period where it costs about €100 or so to reregister.

Looks like the whois info is still showing your details.

Can you log int your Names Co. account (that looks like where you registered it.

    You still own the webdomain.

Register.it are the company through whom the domain was registered for you.

Just get it renew it as soon as you can.

As you can see, the register.it crowd have already re-registered it until next year, awaiting your renewal.

My post above you clearly shows its still registered to the scout group.

Any domain register can register it, not just 365.

Any domain register can register it, not just 365.

Register.it is register365 and they are the current registrars of this domain. Therefore I would assume it was originally registered with Register365 and they have already registered the domain (as you said) already awaiting payment from the scout group. But if they have it registered it may have already been updated it purchased by someone else.
So to find out what the situation on the current registration of this domain, you have to contact the registered registrar which is register.it who is register365

Well the good news is that we originally purchased this from register 365, I'm going to drop them a line now, fingers crossed!

The credit card will still be active next year, so hopefully there won't be any SNAFUs.

    I hope. :P
