How important are those valve caps you put on? I randomly had a flat tire this morning when I went to take my bike out. It was fine yesterday when I got home.

Handy to stop the valve poking into the tire when in your pocket. That's about all.

Depends on what kind of valves you're running. For Schrader (car-type) valves when riding dirt trails, crap and water can get into the valve and cause air to be slowly released from the valve.

For Presta valves, provided that the valve is properly closed then the cap doesn't really add much except neatness and in the long term prevents the threads from gunging up/corroding. If this happens then you'll find it hard to open the valve to change your tyre.

Really they just serve a "keeping it nice and clean" function.

They add weight, leave them at home!

You have a puncture. Don't worry about your valve caps. You can throw away the valve ring too.
