Trekking to 4000m or so advise....?

Hi all,

I am looking to go walking/trekking in the summer (June/July) to a mountain around 4-5000m or so, does anyone have any advise on which range to look in?

I dont have that much experience except Wicklow mtns, Galtees etc so I'm not really looking for a technical climb. Also I am all on my lonesome so would be looking to form/join a group or get a guide.

any advise appreciated.

There's hundreds more I'm sure. I'd recommend doing the Everest or Annapurna trek, as I loved Kathmandu. There are also a number of reasonably non-technical "trekking peaks" in the Everest Himalayas that offer easy guided expedition ascents to very high altitudes, e.g. Island Peak, Mera Peak and Lobuche East.

...but the Himalayas is not a good choice for June/July as it's monsoon season there then. The trekking season in the Everest Himalayas doesn't kick off until October when the air is clear and weather nice.

Kinabalu in Borneo is a fascinating place, and escapes the monsoon. A good option for June/July is South America, you could do one of the trek's to Macchu Picchu or go trekking in the Cordillera Blanca (Peru) or Cordillera Real (Bolivia).

I'll add one to the list above. Mount Toubkal in Morocco is just over 4,000m and can be climbed all year round.

Try Central Asia - Tajikistan, Kyrgistan etc... you'll be well off the normal tourist trails. get some 'Lonely Planet' guides from your local library and have a adventure. you can even go trekking in northern Afghanistan using Tajikistan as a base... there's a massive, almost inffinate number of un-named, un-climbed peaks all through CE through the 'stans and into China.

Katmandu is absolutely heaving - if you want to keep your illusions of the Himalaya, don't go there.
