Squeeky Engine Noise

    Hi all,

I have a 12 year old Mark 4 Golf, thankfully it hasn't given me any major bother, just recently it's started making a shrill squeaking noise.

    - It sounds like a shrill squeaking noise and i think it may be attached/close to a fan because the noise pulses. It may well be the fan sticking on something.

    - It occurs when the car is idling and up to 20mph.

    - It doesn't happen under acceleration

    - It's a familiar sound i've heard from other cars with a bit of wear and tear.

I was wondering if anybody had an idea what it could be or weather i could fix it myself by tightening something?

Sounds like it's just your fan belt loose or worn.

As above, worn or contaminated Auxiliary belt normally.

Thanks for the replies lads and excuse my ignorance, but the fan belt and Auxiliary belt are the same?

Is it just a matter of picking up another and swapping it off? Or is this a job for the mechanic?

A good way to figure out if it is your fan belt is to put some baby / talcum powder onto the belt. If the noise goes you know what it is. If you are mechanically minded it is a fairly straight forward job to fix

Yes they are the same thing, technically, almost no modern cars have an actual fan belt, its just a term that is still used.

That's excellent, thanks very much for all the tips lads.

I'll start out with the talc and then go buy the part if required.

    Thanks again all!
