    Hi,

I'm new to this board so apologies if this has been asked / answered before but I couldn't find anything.

I recently acquired a Smart Technicolor TG582n modem / router and I want to change it to use OpenDNS. The web interface doesn't seem to allow me to change the DNS but I read elsewhere on the internet that I should be able to Telnet to it and use CLI but I've been unable to find a way through.

    Any ideas?

Some googling turned up these links, not sure if you've seen them already:

    http://wiki.aa.org.uk/index.php/TG582N
    http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html

If your system doesn't have telnet, download PuTTY and see if you can connect to the CLI through the default gateway address.

Yeah, I've seen them. Trouble is, when I TELNET 192.168.1.1 I get:
Connecting To 192.168.1.1...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed

I wonder if I should be using a different port but there's nothing in the doc to suggest that.

    Cracked it.

In this document: http://wiki.aa.org.uk/index.php/TG582N there's a "throwaway line" saying, "Use the configuration-wizard (Firefox seems to work best) and choose ADSL(Expert). TODO: Describe where to find this."

The where to find this bit is:
Using the web interface to the modem:
    Select Technicolor Gateway
    Setup my Technicolor Gateway
    Click Next
    Choose ADSL(Expert) and click Next
    Choose VPI/VCI 8.35
    Choose PPPoE
    Enter your userid and password

Once that's all done, your connection will restart and the router will have address 192.168.1.254 then all the telnet stuff will work.

Thanks Badger, I was able to login to the CLI using your tip (I dont know how you spotted that but I'm glad you did).

I configured ipqos using the guide here:http://npr.me.uk/ipqos.html

I reckon it may have stabilised my online gaming when others in the house are streaming video but I wont know for sure unless it stays stable for a few weeks. Also, the guide showed an llu queue which isnt present on my router.
