My son found this in the front garden. Wondering what species, thought it was a toy at first.

Yep its a Starling egg, I found one last year while out for a walk in Skerries. Has it hatched? doesn't look like any damage from the pictures.

No damage. No telling how long it's been out of the nest. Currently outside in planter.

    Squod,

Do you have a number of house sparrow that use your garden?

I ask because for the last few years I have been finding starling eggs on my lawn or in the gutter etc., and last year and again this year I noticed who was evicting the eggs. It was my usual army of spring/Summer house sparrows. Have seen them do it a number of times now where they nip in to where the starlings are nesting and come out seconds later rolling an egg.

Little buggers are something else for trying to nick nesting spots. Have seen them try to evict tits from nest boxes, seen them try to evict robins, and of course seen them empty starling nests with no doubt the intention of nicking the nesting spot.

Interesting. They're nesting in the end of my gutters. Guess I'll find some more along the street so. Every second house seems to have a similar problem.
