I'm going to say Assos bibs but lots are going to disagree with me! ;)

    I wont disagree,
Yes, a bit pricier than most bibshorts,
But, for a few extra euros, definitely worth it for longer days in the saddle,
Have Santini and Adiddas bib shorts, both great products
But always find myself reaching for the Assos especially for longer rides.....

Assos have an outlet website that a friend of my dad's has used many times and swears by it. Kit is a few 'seasons' old but I suppose any reduction in price is good. Haven't tried Assos yet, thinking about treating myself to a set soon enough though!

    Castelli body paint...

They're bloody expensive but they are without doubt the most comfortable and best fitting shorts I've ever owned.

Rapha bibshorts with the Cytech pad are a close second.

I think the emotional cost is too high.... unless paired with this ArZg4rACMAARg1A.jpg

Gonna hijack thread for a moment...

Any recommendations for somewhere in Dublin to buy / try on cycling shorts? For a newbie like myself, looking to buy my first pair =D.

Where did you buy them online?? Also what are sizing like - how does S M and L translate to waist size?

I use Assos which are pricey but very well made and last a long time if you take care of them (i.e., wash them properly after use using the white stringy bag they supply). . Their winter gear is probably better relatively than the summer gear but the design and fit is super really. I used their online measurement references and they are spot on for the bibs, jerseys and jackets.

    Santini
    Etxeondo
    Panache
    Squadra
    Rapha
    Campag

    in that order.

Are the Assos as good as they say?
These look like good value: http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/assos-bib-shorts-t-fiuno-s5/aid:240357

edit: just realised prices are in sterling. D'oh!

Big fan of the Specialized BG RBX Bib Shorts - http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=65229

They last really well and the chamois stays good. With shorts, you get what you pay for - when I started out I bough shorts that were < €50... Wouldn't touch them now. Assos is always a good bet.

    may i ask why?
do you get better padding or something with these? i presume all reputable shorts are made of high quailty material anyway.

also, i dont understand bibshorts..... why? and what is wrong with normal shorts?

I just personally find Assos bibs very comfortable - I have shorts, 3/4s and tights and they all fit really well and stay comfortable on long rides! I also really like the finish of Assos products and they last for ever if taken care of!

While there is (plenty of) room for debate regarding brand I think most people would agree that bibs are better than shorts - they are more comfortable and stay where they are supposed to!

I wore short shorts for a few years and began to develop arthritis in the lower back due to sweat accumulation at the base of the t shirt underneath dryinging into the skin.

tooks months for GP's to figure out waht the problem was and kept treating for a kidney infection for months .

doc was a cyclist and recommended a change to full bib shorts and the back pain went away and never came back.

ever see lads with short shorts and their lower back exposed to cooling air.........
