The Imperial is on EyreSquare whereas the Carlton is about a 30 minute walk.

Yeah the Carlton isn't really walking distance from town, bus or taxi needed really.

The Carlton can be swarming with kids! If you have kids and are taking a break away from your own then you may not want to stay here!

Of the two and based on location your only option is the Imperial. Although there are plenty of better options in town.

Id skip The Imperial so if you want a luxury feel, the further out of town you go the better deals or prices you should get and you really wouldnt be more than 10 or 15 in a cab or bus even. The Menlo Park is a 15 min walk from town and in a similar price range to the Carlton. Really good hotels in the city centre are The Meyrick and Park House but im guessing that would be outside the price range.

Has hotels from 39 per person per night.

Harbour Hotel is pretty good, and it's down by the docks.

Some reviews here and are shown on a map - http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotels-g186609-Galway_County_Galway-Hotels.html

You mention the leisure centre in the Carlton as a plus point. You won't get a swimming pool in a lot of the city centre hotels with the exception of maybe the Meyrick and Radisson.

Check out the house hotel, it's very central but off the main streets so won't be too busy. I was at a meeting there recently, It's a boutique hotel and has a really plush decor so you'll have that luxury feeling!

Not sure of prices but I'd say it's mid range.

Would second the House hotel also. Cosy hotel in centre of town with nicely decorated bedrooms.

I would choose the Radisson, they often have good weekend breaks on offer, worth a look. It's a fab hotel, few minutes from Eyre square and the spa is great.

Meyrick dont have a swimming pool, they have a spa with outdoor hot tub and indoor jacuzzi.

There are two fine hotels in Salthill, both on the Atlantic seafront and on bus routes 401 and yes, both have pools. Salthill Hotel and Galway Bay Hotel.
Salthill is about 2km from city centre.
