    HI there,

Im due to start my first year exams this week but am in no fit shape to do so having been sick for over three weeks with severe tonsilitis - will have to be removed soon.
Anyway i am coming back to strength and am wondering what the situation is with regards:

1)IF i don't sit some/all exams now and am excused until autumn, do my autumn results count as a first sitting? or will my result be a pass/fail regardless, as is the norm for repeat exams?

    2) If i have medical proof etc and am excused, do i still have to fork out for the repeat??

I could physically do the exams I believe, I am nearly better i think, butI havent been able to prepare well, will certainly underachieve greatly and will struggle to pass, while my xmas results were all 65+.

Thanks for any advice anyone may be able to give...

Email the head of your school. As long as you have a valid medical reason and a doctor's cert to back it up you should have no problems. Usually in cases like this it'd count as your first sitting and you won't need to pay.

Best of luck and feel better!

    This.
Whatever ones you don't sit this week/next week will be marked with either an Deferred/Illness symbol next to it when they come out in June/July. Then when you sit them in August, it'll be counted as the first attempt rather than a repeat. And you won't have to pay the repeat charge.

In order to officially notify DCU you must fill out a form R30 Extenuating Circumstances and attached a doctors sick cert. Form here http://www.dcu.ie/registry/forms/pdfs/R30.pdf

What happens if you fail the august sitting then (if you're taking it due to extenuating circumstances)? Can you repeat the module the following year along with your normal modules for that year?

I am not able to make it to an exam today, I have been getting sick and just would not be able to make it up to college on a bus. Will I be able to fill in the absence from examinations form, or is there any point if I don't have a doctors note? What happens if I just don't do anything and don't show up?

Depends. Many programmes do not allow you to carry a module into a later year and therefore worst case you would be repeating (for first time) a module for a year and then progress. Real pain. This is now the case for computing, but I don't know about others. Don't panic about that... cross that bridge IF you come to it.

Yes, but recently they have become strict and don't accept them with out a sick cert. A lot depends on your programme board chair.

Absent = Automatic Fail and repeat in August

Based on my own experiences, I would:
    • Fill in form R-30 available here, which is the extenuating circumstances form. For this, you will need to get your GP/Consultant to write briefly on the back page, and corroberate your condition. This MUST be handed in before this Friday (25th May), otherwise it will not be looked at.
    • If you miss an exam, I'd send in form R-41, available here, for absence from an examination. You must have a medical certificate from whomever, as well as a written statement from yourself saying why you were absent. This should be handed in to the Registry ASAP.
    • Finally, if you know full well you're not going to be able to sit the exams, or some of them for that matter, I'd apply for deferral, which is form R-33, available here. For this, you need a letter from a GP/Consultant/etc. explaining why you wish to defer. Also, you'd need to meet with your programme chairperson, and discuss the situation with him/her. Then he/she will decide if they support/reject your application.

All of the above is dependent on the meeting of the examinations board, who look at all the above forms in a confidential manner and will have the final say as to whether your submission is acceptable or not.

As to your query about whether it'd count as a fail or not, I applied for extenuating circumstances for the Semester 1 examinations, for the module I failed it simply said "illness". This will appear on my transcript too. While I can't speak for you, as it is done on an individual basis, I'm just letting you know.

Hope you get better soon, and PM me if you have any more questions :)
