Focus MPG

    Hi guys!

I have a 2005 1.6 TDCi Focus LX. It's doing some pretty poor mileage at the moment. In the region of around 45MPG. I heard that it should be doing around 60MPG.

My daily commute to work is in the region of 60 miles round trip including a small bit of city driving in Cork.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this poor mileage?

    Thanks in advance!

As above what speed do you drive at?

Also, when was it last serviced?

Where did you hear it can do 60mpg? Manufacturer's figures? These figures are measured in normal driving conditions, these figures are are sprussed up to make them more attractive.

Driving style(revs, gears etc), heavy junk in the boot, poor quality tyres/incorrect pressures/wheel alignment, stop/start traffic etc etc will all effect MPG.

That's all assuming that your car is properly serviced and in good condition.

Also, advertised MPG figures generally have very little to do with real world figures.

My speed is generally around 55-60mph.

I get the car serviced every 6000 miles. It's a full service, changing oil, fuel and air filters etc.

i reckon at that you should be hitting over 50. Fill you tank. Drive, say 200 miles, then refill the tank. Write down how many litres it took to fill the tank, the get out the calculator. That's the only way to get your exact mpg.

I drive the same engined focus, albeit in van form. I religiously fill it on empty and get between 4.8L and 5.0L per 100 Km, so about 57mpg. This would be 85% motorway speed.

Wow, that's great fuel economy. I also have the van variant....a 2009 but in 1.8 TDci guise. I recently got a lot more light footed to try get more economy. Used to get around 800km per tank and now get around 900km per 50 litre tank. Which is about 6.0l per 100km.....not a patch on the 1.6!
