Hi,my girlfriends Leon TDI is strugling to rev and accelerate like it normally would do.

Once the revs hit 1,500 rpm the car seems rather gutless and has no desire to rev or accelerate propperly.

Theres no management light or warning light on the dash and oil temp seems fine too.

There is a small "whirring" type noise when the car is reved up.But the whirring noise goes away when the car goes back to idling.

Car has done 117,000 miles so far.

Any ideas what it could be??

    Thanks.:)

I'd be checking all the intercooler pipes to see if any have broken or popped off.

I was in the front passenger seat when it happened and the car just felt gutless.

She put her foot down in all gears and it just didnt want to rev up after 1500 rpm and took an age to get up to a decent motorway speed.

And the small whiring noise when it was revved up in neutrel.:(

Im hoping its not the turbo.

I,ll have a look at the intercooler piping.

A failed turbo would have more dramatic effects.:P

The whirring noise could be the sound of the turbo spinning which would be audible if a pipe was off.

Plug out the airflow meter, see does it make any difference.

Right, girlfriend is just back from trying the car out again.

Car seemed to be back to normal when it was restarted and driven again.

But when she put her foot down propperly the problem has come back again.

Wont rev up and accelerate propperly after around 1500 rpm.Whirring noise aswell.

    Intercooler,MAF or something else???

And definitely no engine management light on or flashing when you try to go over 1500?

Dash is reading normaly, everything looks fine on the dash.

No flashing "service" signal or engine management light.

Everything looks fine on the dash.

I popped the bonnet and had a listen to the engine, incase it may have dropped a cylinder onto 3 cylinders, but it sounded fine with regards the TDI engine sound.

Very small whirring noise when its reved up and down though.

I did all that earlier on this evening, gone dark now.

The problem started on the way back down the M1 motorway this evening. She went to accelerate and overtake a car and there was no power or revs in the car, when she put the foot down.

    Got the car back home,eventually.

I didnt unplug the MAF though (never thought of that).

I,ll try that in the morning and get her to drive the car.

I will also have a look at the intercooler and hoses and see if anything has come loose.

    Thanks for the help.

Similar think happened the Toledo recently. one of the vacuum hoses was after popping off by the EGR valve. Check around there in case anh have come loose.
Once I replaced it all was grand, As for the Intercooler. I changed it this weekend as I discovered it was making a whistling noise when being driven on. This noise is in it since it was bought last October. 10k miles later and it was still at it. Driving away grand. Changed the intercooler after discovering there was a 3" split on the plastic part where the bottom hose connects. Apparently the car runs better than ever now.

Sorry is this sounds stupid, but can I ask where the EGR valve would be on the TDI engine?

My brain is just not working at the moment.

    Thanks.:o:D

In this pic where Sean posted. Just about at the right of the red circle behind the filler cap (If you can visualise that) under the manifold there are 2 small hoses, it was one of those fell off on the Toledo.

    Right,think I found the problem.

There was a small braided black hose that was dangling loose down near the airbox on the car.

I presumed that this hose slots into the airbox, just under the MAF.

Slotted the hose back on the car, girlfriend took the car out for a spin, and the car flew up and down the motorway this morning, according to her.

No problems with revs or acceleration what so ever.

So Im presuming that hose is meant to be connected to the airbox??????

    Thanks.

Pic of the airbox and hose .

That particular hose was dangling loose,so Im presuming that hose is supposed to be connected onto the airbox?

    Well,
If the hose was disconnected and car running badly. Now you coneccted it back up and car running fine then that must have been the issue. Check the end of that pipe to see it is frayed, If so it may fall off again. I replaced the one on the Toledo because of this.
