    Hey,

I am going to buy a new laptop, I was looking at a macbook pro and a dell xps,
I am wondering what the advantages of the mac are over the xps, as the mac is easily €500 more.

    Thanks in advance

    D

I wouldn't go for any of them they are both over rated brands . Try to buy a custom laptop and pick whatever you need that way you will save a lot of money :D

Well what do you need it for? I've had a dell and now have a mac and my sister has an XPS. I hated my dell, it was slow, bloated, battery was shíte!! and it was clunky. In the last week of it's life the HD burned out, fan broke, screen cracked in half and the casing broke as the plastic was crap. I was being careful with the laptop and it was only two years old. My sister's XPS had the graphics card go in it recently so she isn't so impressed, also the battery life isn't great. Other than that the XPS are nice but I like slim laptops with maximum battery. The MacBook Pro is a very good laptop, it is a bit overpriced but I got a refurb for €979 and it's perfect. Battery life is one of the best things about it, bout 7 hours so really great for college or work. It's thin which is really handy when you need to put it in a bag. There's a backlit keyboard which is handy when typing in low light. The operating system is also quite nice, I have windows on it too but I've never needed it. I also find it easier to navigate than a windows laptop. Saying this, it really depends what you need the laptop for.

Stay well away from dell, their machines are cursed, especially custom built ones.

The Macbook pro is the best you can get really. A macbook pro can easily last 6+ years unlike most dell/ hp machines where i'd be lucky to get 3 (so in the long run it'd save you). The battery life is outstanding too, i get 8 hours out of mine :D

I have a windows desktop and do a lot of programming/ gaming on it, and i always find the mac to be the better of the two. The Mac OS is much better. See if you can pick one up cheaper on adverts.ie

If your really wanting a windows laptop, stay away from dells, sonys and toshiba. HP are the best brand windows machines out there, get an Envy if you want windows.

    OP

What do you need your laptop for?
    Gaming/Multimedia/Photoshop/work /skype / screen size / etc ?
    What is your budget?

I have an XPS 15 and really like it. I just went about uninstalling all of the bloatware and after that was fine.

I don't know if it's still available but make sure you order the B+RG screen over the standard as it's far superior in terms of colours and clarity.

The sound from the laptop is superb. JBL speakers and subwoofer really come to play so there's no 'tinny' sound whatsoever.

I ordered mine with a Core i3 as I'm not into hardcore gaming but in terms of speed and performance for older games (Starcraft 2, Command and Conquer and the like) I can run everything on max settings.

GPU is an Nvidia GT 525M so not the most powerful in the world but easily does the job for me.

I like Apple products but imo they're far too overpriced for my liking.

I dont really have a budget, I just want something that will not give me problems and slow down after 6 months.
I would be mainly using it for Multimedia and Work and a small bit of photoshop.

I've had mine for almost a year now and after owning five computers in the past (One with Windows 98, 2 with XP and one with Vista) this is the first one that I've never had to reformat or tinker with to avoid slow down.

Windows 7 is a testament to itself. I'm surprised it runs so well.

As for photoshop. I have it on this laptop and haven't had any slowdown or lag with 8MP photos.
