Sorry guys I presume this has been answered here before but I could not find what I'm looking for while sifting through all the threads.

What I want to know is, I used bought a car/van from dealer a few months ago. I was not VAT registered so I could not claim any VAT back.

If I sell the car on and the next owner is VAT registered, can they claim back the VAT I paid ..?

Can they claim the VAT on a purchase that they weren't involved in? No.

I am not so sure about this. did you get an invoice, was it made out to you? if so , then he cannot ,i think. if you did not, will the original seller give you/the new buyer one now?

If there is no trickery involved ,the Revenue have no problem returning vat, thats how the system works. get some advice

No, you are not charging VAT so there's none to claim

if i remember correctly, if the first owner of the vehicle claimed back the VAT, then it came be done by a 2nd or 3rd.

If you had claimed VAT when you bought, you would now have to charge VAT on the sale price and return the VAT portion to the revenue. You are not VAT registered so can not now charge vat on your private sale regardless of who you are selling to.
Any other plan such as going to the dealer that sold it to you and getting them to give a VAT receipt straight to the new owner would be fraud IMO and VAT fraud is very serious fraud indeed.

No interest in any fraudulent activities, it's just my valuation is based off the price I paid for the vehicle so I thought if I sold it on to someone registered they could claim back if they wished as they would have indirectly paid the VAT. As I describe it though I realize that system sounds like it would be open to a lot of abuse so I understand why it would not work. Thanks for the help anyway appreciate it.
