I have been looking through the forums here to answer a few questions I have but to be honest I am now as confused as I was in the beginning.

We have Sky for a number of years now and due to financial problems it’s on our list to go. My mother in law last week got a Xoro HRS 3500 which looks like its connected to a small UHF aerial on the roof. She has a nice list of channels but I found the picture a bit crappy on her HD TV and I was just wondering is there a better alternative, without breaking the bank?

Also what exactly has she? Is it Freesat or what?

    http://www.tvtrade.ie/xoro-3000-satellite-receiver.html - a FTA satellite receiver.

Freeview is the UK's digital terrestrial TV service thru an aerial similar to our Saorview service. Only available if you live near the border or east coast with an aerial pointing at a UK Freeview transmitter.

Freesat is a sub-free satellite service from the UK, which carries a selection of FTA satellite channels who pay Freesat an annual fee to be included in the Freesat 7 day epg. Similar to Sky in that they are given a fixed channel no, 7 day epg, PVR available, channels are automatically added, deleted or updated as required.

The FTA satellite receiver above will have all the FTA channels but in no specific order and no 7 day epg and no automatic channel update if there are any channel changes.

Both a Freesat and FTA satellite receiver can use the same dish and cabling as a Sky receiver.

Thanks for the reply. Is there anything I can get or something that you could recommend that will do the same AND have an EPG and automatically update channels if there is a frequency change?

If I purchased the Humax Foxsat HDR 500GB could I connect up the UHF areal and pickup the Irish channels also?

    no.
for rte (saorview) channels you will need a saorview set top box.

(a combo box will do all together but wont have a full epg for satellite and may need manual updates in the future)
