Q-School officially got under way this morning. There are 3 events, players making the semi-final in any event get a 2-year tour card. Just thought a thread to keep an eye on the irish interest in it would be a good idea. I'll update results as the tournaments progress.

    Event 1:

    13/5/12

1pm: Declan Brennan (NI) v Martin O' Donnell

    14/5/12

10am: Dessie Sheehan v Vinnie Calabrese
10am: Jason Devaney v Michael Wasley
10am: Josh Boileau v Shahbaaz Khan

7pm: Joe Delaney v Chen Zhe
7pm: John Sutton v Mohammed Raouf
7pm: Jordan Brown (NI) v Ben Harrison

A little bit about the players:

Declan Brennan: Going on 19, from Newry, small enough lad compact cue action, good safety game. Could maybe score a bit heavier but got the game to do well.

Dessie Sheehan: Dessie was Irish Amateur Champion 3 times. 1970, 1971 and 1980. Losing once more in the final in 1979 to future professional Eugene Hughes. Not sure if he retains the game to qualify now but loves his snooker.

Jason Devaney: 19, From Ballina, Mayo, reigning Irish Amateur Champion beating David Hogan 8-6 last year. Multiple winner of under-age titles and rapidly improving. Definite chance of making a tour spot.

Josh Boileau: 16, from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, reigning Irish u-18 champion, another tipped for a big future. Heavy scorer so no surprise to see some big breaks from josh.

Joe Delaney: Dublin ex-professional, qualified for the Crucible in 2010, beating Alan McManus 10-9 in the final qualifying round close to midnight. One of the most naturally gifted players Ireland has produced and definitely one of the favourites to regain a tour card.

John Sutton: English heritage, lived in Ireland for donkeys years now, from Navan, multiple winner of the All-Ireland Club Championships with Celbridge, qualified for Q School beating David Gray amongst others in the Snooker Backer classic. Definite chance if on song.

Jordan Brown: Tall, rangy Northern Irish left hander in the Neil Robertson mode, has been on the tour twice , and at 24 has many years left ahead of him. Absolute chance of qualifying.

Best of luck to all the Irish in the coming weeks and hopefully we can be celebrating 1 or 2 new additions to the Tour, would be great for Irish snooker.

Out of all the Irish lads playing, Joe Delaney and John Sutton have the best chance, both have the pedigree needed to advance Joe more than John in my opinion. However John did beat David Gray in the final stages of the snookerbacker classic en route to winning his entry paid to Q School.

What age is Dessie Sheehan? if he won the irish ameteur in 1970,surely that would probably make him one of the oldest pros if he made it?

John Sutton is doing well at 3 - 2 up though..:)

John Sutton and Jordan Brown (NI) the 2 Irish representatives to progress to Round 2 with good wins over Mohammed Raoof and Ben Harrison.

    Round 2:

    16/5/12:

1pm: John Sutton v Greg Batten
1pm: Jordan Brown (NI) v Fabio Laursen

To be honest, i fancy both the lads in these matches. Unfortunately, should they both win they face each other in Round 3. Which would, at least, guarantee 1 Irish player in Round 4, 2 matches away from a Tour Card.

The bottom half of the draw has been relatively kind. Adam Wicheard and Bobby Cruickshanks would be the likeliest opponents in Round 4, both good players but beatable. The winners of Kyren Wilson v Chen Zhe will be strong favourites to progress from the bottom half of the draw. So all going to plan the route to the Tour Card in Event 1 for John/Jordan is likely to look like this:

    Round 4: v Adam Wicheard
    Quarter Final: v Kyren Wilson

What age is Dessie Sheehan? if he won the irish ameteur in 1970,surely that would probably make him one of the oldest pros if he made it?

I wouldnt be positive but at a guess between 58 and 65. He doesn't look it though whichever it is!!! Tony Knowles, 56, ex-world number 3, is also in the Q-School Draw.

Q School 3 is shaping up quite nicely for the Irish. It is by some distance our best chance of gaining another Irish pro on the tour. Here's the scenario so far:

    Event 3:

Joe Delaney: Into Round 3 after 2 convincing wins over Greg Batten and James Silverwood.

Josh Boileau: Into Round 3 after beating Simon Bevz 4-0.

John Sutton: Outstanding victory over Scott Donaldson 4-1. Donaldson had been the form player in the tournament, narrowly missing out in the final qualifying round in Event 2 and currently has the highest break of 137 in Event 3. So that's a great win.

Jason Devaney: Bye into Round 2.

Declan Brennan: Bye into Round 2.

Jordan Brown: Into Round 3. Jordan missed out on the tour card in the final qualifying round of Event 2. On consistency alone deserves the pro tour ticket. Beat 2 brilliant players so far (Kyren Wilson and Geoff Marter).

    Upcoming Opponents & Predictions

Joe Delaney v Jeff Cundy - Joe really should have too much class for Cundy and i expect him to come through this match 4-2.

Josh Boileau v Richard William King - Don't know much about his opponent but King has had some decent wins. Head says King, but Josh obviously played half decent to win 4-0 so i'll go for the upset 4-2 Josh.

John Sutton v Habib Subah - Subah is a competent journeyman player capable of beating anyone on his day. If John plays to the level of yesterday he will win this. 4-3 or 4-2.

Jason Devaney v Adam Wicheard - This is a really tough one. Wicheard is one of the most improved players in World Snooker in past 3 years and has had a fantastic few years. Jason has struggled in Q School so far. Hopefully all the Irish winning has given him confidence (that and its last chance saloon). Still have to go for Wicheard 4-1. Hope to be wrong!

Declan Brennan v Duane Jones - Another case of hoping to be proved wrong but can't see past Jones here. 4-2.

Jordan Brown v Richard Twomey - Jordan is absolutely flying so he should walk this if in the same form. 4-1.

Best of luck to all Irish in the Final Event. We are only 2 matches away from the match to qualify so today is a big day. Hope to see 3 possibly 4 advancing today which would be brilliant for Irish snooker to give us a chance at another pro.

Not bad on the predictions front!!!!

Josh Boileau came from 3-2 down to win 4-3!!

Joe Delaney came from 3-1 down to win 4-3!!

Jordan Brown breezed through his match 4-1.

John Sutton due to play now shortly.

Unbelievable stuff from the lads well done :)

The good and bad news now is that Josh will play Joe in the penultimate round, which means at the very least we will have 1 Irish player in the final match for the Pro tour card. It's a pity they are drawn together but at least one of them will make it through to the last match.

Great to see them coming through like that.

    Fingers crossed for John...

    So its 4 lads through...:)

Joe Delaney is the sole survivor and he's up against Rod the Plod for the tour card...

Joe knocked out by Rod Lawlor, only two players from the Republic on tour next season and thats the two old boys Doherty and O'Brien.

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,066 ✭✭✭Silvio.Dante

Such a shame for Joe coming so close...:( But Rod soundly beat him 4 - 0.

I actually enjoy watching Rod play. He's so counter cultural to the 'whiz kids'...:)
