Losing my holidays!

I've been working in my company for 4 years. I have been informed that I will be required to work in August, whereas before I had the whole month off.
My contract state I have just the statutory 20days annual leave, but I always had much more than that.
Can my employer make these changes or do I have to abide by what my contract states?

If your contract states 20 days, then that is all you are entitled to.

Your employer can also restrict when you take your holidays if there are valid business reasons to do so.

Not strictly true. If you have worked for a certain amount of time (not set by lawm but generally viewed as 1 year) with a particular set of conditions, then these conditions form part of your contract and supercede the original contract. It is based on the fact that you and your emplyer agreed changes after the contract was signed.

In this case, I would tell your employer that you are not happy with the changes to the terms and conditions of your contract/terms of employment. You can probably negotiate either a payment in lieu of your lost holidays. Your other option is to go to an employment solicitor and get his opinion.

Were the extra days paid or unpaid?

I'd say go with the 20 days and see if any arrangements for unpaid time can be made if you need extra...
I know that if you made a fuss over this and worked for me I'd be instructed by my senior manager to nail your ass on every single detail for ever more while you were in the company..
Consider what you had in the past as a bonus and get on with life !
