hey all. just a very quick question.

im looking at changing to either a vw touareg or bmw x5 or possibly a discovery 3 in the next month or so. is anyone aware of anything on these that i should be specifically checking for?

theres a slim possibility of getting a merc ml jeep aswell but thats unlikely.

they would be around 06/07 models. any advice in relation to any of these is appreciated.

Discovery 3 is reliable compared to previous incarnations. As with anything big and expensive you'd want to see a service history and timing belts done including the one on the fuel pump which is at the back of the engine and fun to change! Suspension airbags are a consumable item but are cheap and easy to change.

Can't comment on X5 or Touareg, I'll leave that to someone else as I wouldn't be seen dead in either of them!

Brother in law had a touraeg. Very hard on tyres, especially the front outers. Bought new and had a set replaced under warranty. Was in Dublin at Vw headquarters for tech inspection/ adjustment. Not a hard driver but couldnt keep it in tyres which were expensive. Did research during ownership and found similar issues with Cayenne and Q7 which appear to share components. Check forums in the USA.

Tyres is a problem on all modern big luxury 4x4s with sophisticated transmissions and suspensions. D3/4 and RRS will also eat tyres if the suspension isn't properly aligned by someone who knows what they are doing. Keeping matched tyres is also vital. The fashion for big rims and skinny tyres doesn't help

if the suspension isn't properly aligned by someone who knows what they are doing

Guys that can properly align modern vehicles are getting rarer by the day. Fancy equipment is very common, knowledge is less so.

X5 changed in '07, big difference in price between old & new model.

His Vw was checked many times by vw head office(technical) in Dublin for alignment and excessive tyre wear, where do you go from there. He thinks it needs adjustment outside the range of adjustability in the chassis/suspension if you follow me.
