Do people still hitchhike?

I'm going to be travelling from one town in Wicklow to another later today, and I was thinking (seeing as money has been tight lately) that instead of getting a taxi I might chance my arm and thumb a lift. What are my chances? Are motorists still amenable to picking up hitchhikers?

What do people think? Is it just me or has hitchhiking become more frowned upon in recent years? It seems to be something that was quite common up to recently, but has become rarer activity in latter years...

I definitely see less on the roads in recent years, saying that was chatting to my mates about it in the pub few months back and we agreed to try pick up a hitchhiker in the weeks thereafter and talk about our experience...we all picked at least one up (we have uneventful lifes :o)

Unfortunately not near the Wexford area tomorrow, but i'd encourage you to give it a punt.

This isn't a travel query and I'm reluctant to move it to the commuting and transport forum, but feel free to repost it there and the Mods of that forum can make up their own minds.
