Tyre wont fit

    Hi,

I got tired of fixing punctures on my sister's bike so I brought it to the local bike shop and they suggested a puncture resistant tyre as the existing tyre was pretty threadbare. That was about a month ago and it got its first puncture this week. Not a major problem, as I have a spare tube so I went to swap it out but to my surprise I found that the tyre no longer fits. It's a Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700x28C. It was quite expensive and only a month old yet it seems that now it is only fit for the bin. I really dont understand how this happened though, can a tyre be stretched beyond repair by cycling on for a bit before realising that it has a puncture ?
The problem is that the shortest diameter is now longer that the diameter to the outer edge of the wheel rim. Curiously its only on one side of the tyre, one side still fits the rim (although pretty loosly) whereas the other side is now too loose to fit the rim.
Is this tyre now useless ? Is it usual for this to happen? Is Schwable just a poor quality brand?

    Thanks,

    Usjes

yes i would say its faulty.
btw schwalble tires are top notch the marathon is a heavy tyre but it does help big time with the dreaded puncture.
its possible the wire bead has snapped on one side of the tyre .
    take it back.

Definitely not! It's the most puncture resistant tyre out there and the brand used on the Dublin Bike rentals. My wife's bike has 7,000kms without a puncture on a pair of them. They don't even have any of the cuts caused by glass and flint that you'd find on normal tyres. As others have said it sounds like you may have got a faulty one.

Perhaps there was a bad batch of them - maybe the wire bead gave way. Though I've never seen it before, especially with marathons.

I had this same problem. Unknown to me I had a slight buckle on the wheel. The tyre had adapted to it but when I took it off to fix a puncture I couldn't get it back on. I think this could be the problem with yours. Give it a spin and see if you can see a slight wobble, your LBS should be able to fix it for 20eur or so.
