I have a US passport but have never worked over there. Just wondering if anyone who has worked in New York on a J1 or otherwise could give me some idea of how difficult it is to get a job as a waiter/busboy at the moment. Also, would now be a good time to go or should I leave it till around September? Thanks for any advice

Summer is tourist season, so more jobs, but also all the J1ers are over there, so more competition for jobs. If you are not picky in terms of what type of bar/ restaurant you work in, you can usually get a job, especially if you have some experience. Check out the Irish bars, they'd love someone they can hire legally who is from Ireland.

OP why are you limiting yourself to waiter/busboy for work-hard, hard, hard work and long hours? If you have a US passport you can work at anything?

Not to mention you will be basically working off tips if you're a server/food runner and a wage just mildly better than minimum wage as a host.
